The hardest part of nicotine withdrawal is remembering that your memory sucks. I'm a week into attempt #10 right now, and the symptoms are not that bad. Mostly feels like "boredom".And that's the problem. My memory is telling me that nicotine was "fun". A way to enjoy a spare moment. Like I could just have a weekend indulgence and be fine. But it's not true. I kept a diary during my last bout of usage and it was never "enjoyable", it just got me back to baseline "not feeling awful".

Nicotine is a weird addiction. Withdrawal can feel insurmountable, but at the same time, trying to introspect and define it, the symptoms evaporate away.I want nicotine right now, and it feels like the same way I want a nice snack or a good dessert. But after doing it, I realize, my memory has tricked me again. It isn't all that enjoyable of a consumption experience, it just insinuates itself into your time.I'm sorry for all the jabbering. But writing this is helping me remember why I quit.

Before nicotine, I used to talk about my alcohol consumption during particularly dark times of my life being near alcoholism. Looking back now, I was never anywhere near addicted to alcohol. I had bad habits with how I spent my time, in general. I was no more addicted to alcohol than I was addicted to chicken wings or shitty conversation with barflies.Nicotine addiction is compelling. I've never snuck out while my wife was sleeping to get a beer. But I have to get a new pack of vape juice.

@seanmcbeth Quit smoking after picking up the habit in grad school. First week cold turkey was brutal, but the withdrawal symptoms resolved soon after much faster than expected. Still get cravings, but yeah, much like craving a soda or candy instead of a dependence.

@psychxr Yeah, the worst is the 3rd day. On the day I quit, most things feel fine. I want a drag, but it's more habit than anything. On the 2nd, I'm anxious, but I know that I just quit. "I'm quitting for a reason!" is easy to remember. On the 3rd day, I'm crabby, I'm snapping at my family, I have no control over my emotions, and I know. I know that a single drag on my vape pen will solve my family's problem of having to tolerate me.

@psychxr the 2nd worst is the quiet times after work is done, after the family has gone to bed, after I've gotten through the worst of the withdrawal, and I'm just sitting around. Maybe 30 minutes before I intend to go to bed. Not enough time to do anything. Kinda bored. "Oh! But a hit of nicotine is kinda fun!" No, it's not. But it fucks with your head and makes you think it was great while you were doing it.

@seanmcbeth You might try a pipe. Less weird stuff in the lungs.

@seanmcbeth Vapes and cigs take you very close to sudden overdose and then withdrawal.Cigars and pipes are gentler.Never tried snus. It looks like a turd in a silk sock.

@seanmcbeth Lungs can’t be repaired, and when they break for any reason your life turn into a living hell. Take care of your lungs. Never put anything in there that shouldn’t be there. Also the sum of all vices are constant. You need to replace it with something as addictive, but not detrimental.I recommend guitars. They will destroy your wallet so you can’t afford anything else.

@seanmcbeth hang in there. I ended go going through this twice before: THAT hell I can remember as well as the “memory tricks” you refer. You’re right that your memory will trick you. It’s been like 25 years for me, and I still can have the “ oh, a cig after dinner would be awesome” thought. Consider yourself better than others, that’s what helped me through it. Better to own your destiny, not the monkey on your back. I got rid of booze 3 years back and my next one is caffeine.
