It truly is amazing how Elon can know so little about the site he massively overspent to buy. The scammers aren't using the official API, dude.

@mmasnick $100 A MONTH for API access?! He needs to just be honest: "I over paid for this toy, pay it off for me!"

@mmasnick Also, there is absolutely a verification process. Before gaining access, you have to essentially submit an application with an essay explaining to Twitter why you want access before they'd consider granting you an account (that they can presumably easily track). The sign up process was arduous enough to put me off signing up to make a joke bot.Or, at least, all that was required before Musk took over.

@mmasnick Don’t attribute to ignorance that which is caused by rank dishonesty. He’s not uninformed; he just lies. Apartheid boy is a pig.

@mmasnickI'm unclear on all this #TwitterAPI stuff. Elon did something with the API that killed Tweetbot, but is now removing free access on February 9th (and charging a lot). Claiming to do it to prevent bots. But couldn't he just require everyone to register to use it, charging where the use is expensive for them? Or outright banning if it's an abusive bot. Assuming he's not an idiot but maybe lying, could we make any assumptions about what the goal of all these changes really are? Thanks.

@wjmaggos @mmasnick And, there are very useful/important "bots" like the ones the National Weather Service has to auto-post severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings.

@EarthCog @mmasnickagreed but those should not be on a private platform, locking the public into advertising and someone's algorithm. just like governmental agencies have websites, they should have instances.

@wjmaggos @mmasnick They are already posted via many other methods, including the government websites, but it is an additional means they've used and is helpful.

@wjmaggos @mmasnick Part of it appears to be an earnest desire to monetize corporate PR accounts and such doing automated posts. Which I think is acceptable. I think they also have lots of commercial opportunities to monetize social graph data and public tweet data, and I think that's fine for them to commercialize too. I think it's silly to charge for automated posting from what we might term "affinity" bots - programmatic entertainment for the masses and such.

@mjgardner @mmasnick @chris so is it not trackable which of these registrations is engaged in what activity? couldn't they charge to register (whatever it took to vet them), but not (or very little) for ongoing usage?

@wjmaggos @mjgardner @mmasnick From the outside it all looks very arbitrary. We have to wait and see if there is a actually a viable plan behind this or if it is really just very bad management skills.

@wjmaggos Twitter should require registration and charge for Write (posting/following/etc) access. Flat rate or per write. Bots and scammers won’t pay and would be easy to cut off. Free Read-Only.

@wjmaggos I’m no programmer, but my understanding is that blocking / charging for access to the API won’t stop bots. Evidence points to the possibility that he is an idiot.

@wjmaggos @mmasnick I'm clear that Elon 1) doesn't know wtf he's doing 2) is turning twitter into a platform for unmoderated Nazis, racists, and insufferable red-pill assholes 3) not going to repair the damage he's done to Twitter's reputation by destroying the platform through his reckless actions. I'm unclear as to what the true value would be in joining or participating on that platform with API access.

@wjmaggos @mmasnick He's a stupid but rich man who bought a machine he doesn't understand, and he's trying to learn by pulling levers randomly, and it's going as well as can be expected, that is "not well at all". The collateral damage he does is entirely irrelevant to him, he simply doesn't care. Anyone trying to predict what he is doing by his actions - including what he himself says about it - is neglecting the fact that he's wildly incompetent; he literally doesn't realize just how unskilled he actually is, nor would he particularly care if he did.

@wjmaggos @mmasnick Bots that do analytics. They'll be too expensive to run so Twitter's own proprietary analytics will be able to lie to you without being challenged.
