Second #flyingless train today, glad I had a theoretical 45 min layover in Milano, consumed almost entirely by late #italo arrival

I was unaware that my #flyingless trip of today would take me through the brandnew Ceneri Base Tunnel. Not much to be seen but an experience nevertheless.

And how could one be #flyingless more efficiently than by travelling 57 km through the world's longest and deepest railway tunnel (the #GotthardBaseTunnel)?

The fifth (and still not final) #flyingless machine today. If you are following this little 🚂 thread, then please keep reading, there will be a conclusion at the end (and maybe some stats later)

And here is the sixth and last train on this #flyingless journey, departing Valence TGV on time, but they announce some delay in order to pick up passengers from Paris - I actually think that's great, a form of solidarity for us who live up in the Drôme valley.

The stats on this #flyingless trip are simple: I walked one km between my home in the Drôme valley and the station, and about the same between my hotel and Venezia Sta Lucia, the rest was rail. To go to Venice, with a stop in Grenoble, was 852 km, 770 of these electric. To go back with no hotel night was 1217 km, 1135 electric.Unnecessary to even calculate the carbon footprint - you cannot get lower than that, by car it would have been 685 km.

But the sad part is this: No involved rail operator would tell you that this form of #flyingless travel is possible, let alone sell you a ticket. To find out about existing connections, your only help is bahn.de, and getting the tickets is a piece-by-piece operation, of course with no help if you miss connections. This is as if a shop had non-polluting goods, but they would hide them from your eyes and remove most normal warranty if you still insisted to buy them.

So what people do is fly or drive, claiming that it is "convenient" or even "the only possible way". I find that depressing and I am sick to hear governments claim to have "climate policies" as long as these simple obstacles are not removed.(end of my thread on this week's #flyingless effort)
