But the sad part is this: No involved rail operator would tell you that this form of #flyingless travel is possible, let alone sell you a ticket. To find out about existing connections, your only help is bahn.de, and getting the tickets is a piece-by-piece operation, of course with no help if you miss connections. This is as if a shop had non-polluting goods, but they would hide them from your eyes and remove most normal warranty if you still insisted to buy them.

So what people do is fly or drive, claiming that it is "convenient" or even "the only possible way". I find that depressing and I am sick to hear governments claim to have "climate policies" as long as these simple obstacles are not removed.(end of my thread on this week's #flyingless effort)

Mostly for the #trainbubble and the #staygrounded people I want to share a few impressions from a five-days hike in Catalonia we made last week: we reached our starting point by train and we went home from the endpoint by train as well. So here comes a little 🧵 about the "before and after" of a five-days walk from Besalú to Ripoll:#noflying

... just a small #noflying trip today, hopefully allowing me to check the condition of the #viarhona from #Valence northwards. Weather report says I should not even try, but at least here in our valley of the #Diois, it looks a little more promising. TER to Valence nearly on time and with plenty of room for bicycles.

Deluges of Antarctic meltwater threaten to collapse the oceans' circulation currents https://www.sciencealert.com/deluges-of-antarctic-meltwater-threaten-to-collapse-the-oceans-circulation-currents "If this happens, it would deprive the deep ocean of oxygen, limit the return of nutrients back to the sea surface, and potentially cause further melt back of ice as water near the ice shelves warms in response. There would be major global ramifications for ocean ecosystems, climate, and sea-level rise."

"Getting reports from multiple people now of 'particulates' raining down in areas of Port Isabel after the nearby explosion of the SpaceX rocket stack Starship/Superheavy," NPR reporter Pablo de la Rosa tweeted, accompanied by pictures of grit-covered surfaces. https://futurism.com/wildlife-starship-explosion "It's especially unfortunate because the surrounding area that SpaceX chose for its base back in 2014 is a unique and diverse ecosystem."

New paper in Ecological Economics: The economic cost of a 130 kph speed limit in Germany https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0921800923001131The message is clear "a 130 kph speed limit will generate welfare gains in the order of 950 million Euro per year. The ‘no speed limit’ policy consequently represents a subsidy forwarded to fast drivers."

Can someone please explain to me how ANYONE now justifies posting ANYTHING on the hate speech site, given that, apparently, you can no longer access that content without an account there. A closed club, and I will not sign up for it.

"Thousands of scientists are cutting back on Twitter, seeding angst and uncertainty."IMHO, many of those colleagues (and also environmental activists) who think they cannot leave the hate speech site forget one important thing: We actually BUILT our follower community there ourselves, so why could we not move them to a more acceptable and democratic environment? Doing "a little of both" renders the migration to #mastodon et al. slower and less effective as it could be.https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-02554-0
