The RNZ article on Auckland landlords hiking prices after the floods. 🤬 <<many swears>>"And if if the rental price has changed during that time, then that is the market." Yeah, and when "market conditions" mean your interest rates get hiked several more % and you lose said property or go bankrupt, I'm just going to sip my tea, shrug, and say "that is the market."It really takes a special kind of asshole to choose to price gouge when people are suffering.

To be clear, they're not talking about prices going up due to increased costs. They're talking about "supply and demand".Tenants, know your rights. If you're unsure, call Tenancy Services on 0800 836 262 8:00am - 5:30pm, Mon to Fri. An interpreter service is available after 9am if needed, and they also have a video relay service for hearing impaired people (also available after 9am).They have a page specifically on repairs after a natural disaster:https://www.tenancy.govt.nz/maintenance-and-inspections/repairs-and-damages/repairs-after-a-natural-disaster/

@explorergraceWe saw a lot of this in Ōtautahi after the earthquakes. It's infuriating. Secure housing is one of the most basic human needs, treating houses as a commodity and leaving it to the market to ensure everyone has it clearly isn't working.

@explorergrace I was living in Te Whanganui-a-Tara at the time, but I still had a lot of whānau and friends affected by the earthquakes and their aftermath.
