FYI Auckland, a new community info hub is opening in Māngere. Details from RNZ news below:A pop-up community and agency information hub will be at the Māngere Memorial Hall, 23 Domain Road, Māngere Bridge from tomorrow Sunday 29 January 2023, 11 – 3pm. Agencies and community groups, alongside Auckland Emergency Management, will be there to provide needs assessments and offer support.

Yeah, and when "market conditions" mean your interest rates get hiked several more % and you lose said property or go bankrupt, I'm just going to sip my tea, shrug, and say "that is the market."It really takes a special kind of asshole to choose to price gouge when people are suffering.

To be clear, they're not talking about prices going up due to increased costs. They're talking about "supply and demand".Tenants, know your rights. If you're unsure, call Tenancy Services on 0800 836 262 8:00am - 5:30pm, Mon to Fri. Putting my mod hat on for a moment. 🎩 Mastodon is seeing an uptick in new & returning members at the moment. Can we please just remember to be kind to each other? We appreciate people trying to help others get started here. But do think about how you're saying things. It can take people a while to find their feet here and an endless stream of "you're doing it wrong" doesn't actually help people - in fact it often has the reverse effect and makes them feel very unwelcome.

A couple of things to remember if you're trying to be helpful:Please check something is actually a rule before you say it's a rule. A lot of people forget that every server has different rules. Mastodon NZ's rules are here: https://mastodon.nz/rules.pdf Check if others have already responded first. 12 people all saying "you're doing it wrong" just ends up feeling like a pile-on. Also, tone matters.Passive aggressive comments about the rabble arriving from the Other Place help absolutely nobody.

@binarytango Me, mostly for admin but also have personal chats there and a few themed rooms. A lotta the time it seems the thing to do is to create the room you want to exist. I should probably actually let people know there's a writer room and an aviation room. 😬

Lots of chatter about different services at the moment. Great to see people building or trying new things. Speaking of which, FYI in case any of these are useful to you, that the fediverse is much bigger than Mastodon. 🦣There's PixelFed (photos), PeerTube (video), Matrix (think discord or signal), Mobilizon (events), Write Freely (blogs), Bookwyrm, Owncast, Castopod, FunkWhale...& much more. ActivityPub can even "talk" to WordPress. There's a ton of cool stuff out there. :mastodondance:

There's stuff beyond fedi and ActivityPub, of course. Point being, you don't have to go where "everyone" is, you don't have to use the "big" things, and you can do/use the things that work for you just because you want to.You wanna blog? Blog. Wanna create a channel dedicated to watching flowers unfurl? Go for it. A podcast about 17th century shipbuilding? Post nothing but pictures of cats? Make jokes about the matrix on matrix? Go for it. Techbros are not actually the boss of us.
