Attended yet another infuriating "grass is greener on the other side" meeting. We watched a presentation from someone at another library, about Sharepoint. After which, everyone sung the praises of all these great features that we can look forward to when we migrate, and how useful it's all going to be.Then I had to be the asshole, and point out that EVERY SINGLE ONE of these features that they're so excited about, we already have in Nextcloud. All of them.1/2

I did two weeks of training sessions with the staff, sent out numerous instructional emails, and typed up pages of documentation in our internal wiki. All so everyone could get intimidated by it all, and simply refuse to use it. So here we are.The same thing is going to happen again, only this time we're paying Microsoft for the pleasure. My comments on this were not well received. Some people are upset.I'm too irritated to care.2/2

@deadtom this won't be helpful at all, but sharepoint is a low point even in microsoft's shitty software emporium.Like most of m365 it's a barely functional minimum-viable product that only gets sold because clueless beancounters think they're getting a great deal with the megabundle when all that's really required is their walled garden office suite.Frankly I find it absurd that the government is going after google and apple for their monopolies, yet leave microsoft alone.🤮

@fedops Yeah. It's all about brand recognition, rather than actual usability or security. It's the idea that Microsoft is so big, and they're everywhere, so it has to be better.Nextcloud was never given a chance here. It was different, and unfamiliar, so it never got used.I want O365 to succeed here, because I want us to succeed. Maybe it will. If it doesn't, there's no point in firing off "I told you so" emails. I'm not doing another migration. They pushed so hard for this. Bed made.

@deadtom yeah, pick your battles as you can't win them all. I used to be very emotional about these kinds of things, but these days I just shrug and collect the paycheck. Do what you want as long as it's not my responsibility; when the whole thing melts down I'll just be laughing.

@fedops @deadtom yeah, me too. I'm in this same position at the moment... clients wants to use M365, my recommendation is to not do that, but the brand recognition wins over security and features (and let's face it, most self-run service have a better uptime too!... or at least is quicker to fix downtime). I can't win it, so I have to shrug it off and do the best with what they want
