@benjaminhollonIt's a set of utilities to manage windows without an actual window manager.Just consider this the latest nerd-cred challenge ;)

@RL_DaneWouldn't that *be* a de facto window manager, then?

@benjaminhollonNyet. Nothing is running until you ask it to run.Think of it like rofi - rofi isn't a window manager, and doesn't run from .xsession, yet you trigger it when you need it to start applications or switch windows.Same idea.

@RL_DaneWait, you switch windows with it? I suppose that's a use case, though not one I ever thought of.So what you're basically saying is that you don't have a single window manager utility, but you do have a set of window management utilities you can combine to createa a similar effect. Kinda like I don't have a file manager, just a set of utilities I combine to a similar effect.

@benjaminhollonOr let's refine the analogy:I don't have a desktop environment, so Dolphin/Nautilus/Caja aren't running when I log in, BUT I can launch that same file manager whenever I want it, OR I can use something dead simple like PCmanFM or nnn instead.

@RL_DaneNot sure that's helping me understand; Dolphin/Nautilus/Caja don't run when I log in either, only sway itself and the programs I told it to start when it begins.

@benjaminhollonIt was an analogy: talking about not running a desktop but isu g desktop utilities when you want to as an analogy for not having a window manager present, but running window management utilities when you want them.

@RL_DaneI kinda see what you're saying, I suppose, thoughI don't entirely see the need for or appeal of that.I think I have enough nerd cred already by not needing a mouse, not even keeping one on my desk. I'm gonna sit on this win for a while before I move on to trying to claim more nerd cred. :)

@RL_DaneFair enough. :)Hmm, what *should* be my next step toward nerd cred, though? I've already established myself as the Keyboard Ninja (I'm considering getting business cards that say that) and braved the ire of the Sheeple (https://xkcd.com/610/, https://xkcd.com/1013/) to claim the title of #xkcdOtron…

@RL_DaneYou know, I'd kinda like to get back into stargazing. Perhaps I should get another telescope for while I'm in the US.Not sure exactly where I'd go with it on campus, but there are options.

@benjaminhollonWhy don't you try a pair of binoculars? They're far more portable and user-friendly, and a decent 20x can still show you a LOT in the night sky.The advice I got when I started dabbling with stargazing about eight years ago was to grab a pair of binocs. Had some fun viewing with them, like the Pleiades.

@RL_DaneTrue, but they're not stable enough for viewing planets, are they? That's what I'm largely interested in.My telescope was 80mm, which was really great.Hmm though there's the added challenge of figuring out where things are when you're further away from the equator... at the equator it was all so easy.

@benjaminhollonNo, you really need a BIG telescope to comfortably view planets. Even with the biggest scope I had (honestly can't remember anything about it; haven't touched it in six+ years), I could just barely see Jupiter's rings. I never got very far in the hobby because 1) crazy light pollution and 2) amazing high-powered telescope photos kinda ruin it for you.

@RL_DaneOh, I don't need that much detail. The 80mm I had was enough.

@benjaminhollon @RL_Dane you can certainly get decent views with an 80mm refractor, but you probably want one with a reasonable focal length (F/8 or greater) rather than a short wide field version. My 127mm Maksutov Cassegrain also gives great planetary views and has a bigger aperture yet is still very compact.Mainly though you need a nice solid, stable mount for it if you want to see any detail.

@RL_Dane @benjaminhollon everyone has their favourite types of mount. Personally I like my simple altaz mount as it requires no fiddly polar alignment.

@teapot_ben @RL_Dane I had an equatorial mount. Since I was *at* the equator, it was dead simple to align. ;)

@RL_Dane @teapot_benMy first early morning with it was as follows:Benjamin internal monologue 1: Okay now I just need to find polaris so I can align this mount.Benjamin 2: Polaris is behind those trees at the horizon.2: You literally can't align this unless you're at the beach, and even then you probably can't because the mainland is in the way.1: Okay then I guess I'm just gonna point this thing north. And we're what, 5°N? I'll set that.2: Nice.1: Oh look, Saturn!2: Whoaaaaa
