New #blog post: How to love your neighbor...https://rldane.space/how-to-love-your-neighbor.htmlThis one was also kind of personal, and represents how my thoughts have been shifting lately, particularly today. In lieu of cc:ing my usual chorus, I'm just going to cc: a handful of good folks for their feedback (if they want to give any) in a separate sub-thread.#rlDaneWriting #WritingMonth #blost #uspol

@pinskia @cobweblol, CPAN-chan is doing her best, leave her be. XDYes, it's about pip and rust. And basically everything else that calls itself a package manager (or something suggesting a package manager), but "mails it in" for essential features.pip removed the search feature years ago, and I'm still salty about it. ;)

@m0xee @pinskia @cobwebI don't remember the original rationale, but given that my "fix" for that decision was just to add a `-ps` mode to my "searchall" script to query PyPI via w3m, I don't see why they couldn't have done something similar.https://codeberg.org/rldane/scripts/src/branch/main/searchallCargo's not terrible, especially with cargo-update.iamb always fails to update for some reason. I haven't had a chance to troubleshoot it yet. I feel I'd quickly get in waaaay over my head.

Dear Programming Language dev teams,If your language has a package manager,it NEEDS to be as fully-featured and easy-to-use as apt.No more "use the website to search for packages"No more "it installs, but not upgrades or uninstalls"No more "Ok, it installs, but it isn't necessarily fully functional"No more "It installs, but you need arcane options for the upgrade to function."MAKE IT AS EASY AS APT,Or don't release a package manager.</rant>, a.k.a. Fin.Merci.

Reading through "Introducing Go," by Caleb Doxsey.I'm surprised that Go only supports 32 and 64-bit floats. I remember in the olden days, computers (without FPUs) had *crazy*-huge floating point numbers. I'm guessing if you're going to slog through doing it all in software, you might as well go whole hog.Oh found it! It was called SANE: Standard Apple Numerics Environment. It supported up to 80 bit floats, and that's on the 6502!!#Go #Golang

To offset more negative emotions in my recent toots, I have to say that @kde @neochat (https://apps.kde.org/neochat/) has become a really excellent #Matrix client. It didn't have E2EE support the last time I tried it, but it works perfectly now, surpassing #Nheko, my previous favorite.I do like #FluffyChat as well, but the UI scaling just doesn't look quite right on my monitor. Oh, and of course, give me real menubars and scrollbars, brah. XD

@clackeA friend of mine had a SMEG-branded kettle and I laughed pretty hard at it. Pretty sure I posted it on here at some point, but this would've been a year ago or so.And it's supposed to be a pretty posh brand, too.In unrelated news, It's cold outsiiiiiide, there's no kind of atmosphereI'm all alone more or lessLet me flyyy high away from here...! 🎢🎢🎢

@praxeologyI kinda liked how notifications worked in classic iOS: A little window would pop up in front of everything, and you could acknowledge or dismiss it, and then it was gone forever. They really were interruptions, and you didn't tend to enable them for too many apps. Now the notification center is just another horrid inbox to go through. XD

@sam @sean @praxeology Even Apple is an ad company. I've been off of iOS for four years now, and I was utterly shocked to see ads in the iOS App Store on a family member's phone a year or two ago. Pretty shameless!

@Mastokarl @sam @sean @praxeology Apple's business model is not hardware anymore. It hasn't been in some time.Precisely what it IS is rather difficult to nail down, though. It's not strictly hardware, It's not software, it's kind of an ecosystem, and it's kind of a cult.

@Mastokarl @sam @sean @praxeologyOh, I do get it. Hardware is the gross majority of their revenue. I don't even have to check ChatGPT's work on that one, even though I don't generally trust it to be factually accurate any more than I could lob a 747 across a football field. But (and this is a tenuous argument to make, so bear with me)... just because their income is from hardware doesn't necessarily make them a hardware company.... 1/4

@Mastokarl @sam @sean @praxeology... 2/4Their business model isn't straight-up hardware. Delta, the faucet company? THAT is hardware. Intel? Hardware. AMD? Hardware. NVIDIA? Hardware.#Apple though? Yes, they make their money FROM hardware... but they do not make their money BECAUSE of hardware. They make their money because of vendor lock-in, reputation, and their vaunted ecosystem....

@Mastokarl @sam @sean @praxeology... 3/4The only reason I would buy an iPhone would be... because the hardware is great? Heck no. The hardware is trivial to replace/repoduce. Samsung makes far better hardware, IMHO, and I've never had a Samsung phone. It's the interplay between hardware, software, ecosystem, luxury brand status, and vendor lock-in.People don't buy iPhones because they're great phones. They're GOOD, but pretty grossly overpriced phones....

@Mastokarl @sam @sean @praxeology... 4/4PEOPLE BUY iPHONES SO THAT THEY CAN FACETIME THEIR MOM.People buy iPhones so they can have freaking blue-bubble status in chats.People buy iPhones not because they are good, but because they are iPhones. That is simply not a hardware company. It's a luxury brand. It's a corporate cult. It's... something else, man. :/

@clacke @praxeology @Mastokarl @sean @samI guess? I don't think they care so much about restricting the usage of iOS to specific hardware (like an old fashioned hardware copy protection dongle) as they do restricting what *you* do with the hardware and software so that you're beholden to their "ecosystem."admiral_ackbar_its_a_trap.mp4
