Social media algorithms replace the role editors had in traditional media. Lots of people like stuff edited for them, and presented to them as worthy of their consideration. Unlike human editors, the algorithms can be highly personalised, meaning you can have an "editor" for whatever you're into.Problem is, they work on the most base reactions you have. Did you stop scrolling for a second because of boobs? An outrageous headline? The algorithm is like having a tabloid editor just for you.

@john this entire field (how to present/order the results of one’s follows/subscriptions) is another candidate where i am hopeful that we can build not just something genuinely new on the fediverse, but multiple new things that work for different people, and all of them beyond the solutions we had before.clearly we don’t need to replicate the algorithms made to maximise ‘impressions’ so those numbers can be quoted to advertisers. and there’s no reason to just replicate reverse chronological and never do anything else. (even though it makes a good baseline standard, i believe.)just recently, i saw someone present their timeline like a messaging program: a list of contacts that each updates with new messages instead of a single stream containing all. does that work for me? no. but it makes sense for someone and they built it. and that’s cool.

@john What I really dislike is that it actually narrows my views and choices instead of widening them.Like, say, I like this kind of art. Now all I see is the same type of art. Nothing else.Yeah, sure but where's the variety? I'm a man with more hobbies and fun than just art, you know. But when it comes to controversial topics or sponsored stuff which I try to avoid, the algo is suspiciously nagging.

@gekitsu Agreed, the open nature of the Fediverse is a competitive advantage. New experiences can be tried relatively easily.
