@Gina we might even pivot to idolising climbing girl bodies! like, have you seen the collective thirst that happened once the general internet became wise to the existence of miho nonaka?

@Gina some progress on a tricky 6A that’s all about being able to establish on the start holds, more moves on a burly 6B+ low roof, and a chill repeat of a 6B roof lip traverse. all on sandstone. soooo pretty well? :)

@Gina tbh, i continue to be amazed that while we have the whole line of clothes from the scrambling/mountaineering direction, leggings for climbing just stopped in the 80s, and now you see women climb in standard yoga pants that don’t look as if they survive contact with a walltopia wall. and all that while bouldering becomes increasingly gymnastic.there’s one austrian brand that made climbing-specific leggings that i can think of, but other than that, it looks to be all yoga pants for the women, manly yoga pan— i mean Compression Pants for the men.

@Gina i’m currently watching this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5E6gpPJwYIY) that @maloki linked, and that seems to be the gist there as well – omicron with a different set of symptoms, and a difference of degree between vaccinated and unvaccinated. hospitalisations nearly exclusively unvaccinated.so i guess the order of the day is to try to avoid overwhelming health systems from omicron’s high transmissibility – a small percentage (hospitalisations) of a really really high number (potentially infected, if let loose uncurtailed) is still a lot of people.

@Gina i’d definitely choose white – the green in that corner might end up looking too dark. (besides, it’s not that well a colour fit to the rest of the colours in there.)

@davidrevoy oh shit, that looks really cool. what a step-up from either less than intuitive colour choices for hard/soft light/overlay, or separate layers for shadows and speculars/other effects.

@john and as an extra factor of despair: from an artistic point of view, anatomy is one of those things we never really finish learning more about, isn’t it?even if we have thoroughly encompassing knowledge of an animal’s anatomy in a scientific sense, there’s no end to how that informs the animal’s posture in all sorts of situations and how to best distill it into marks on canvas.

@john this entire field (how to present/order the results of one’s follows/subscriptions) is another candidate where i am hopeful that we can build not just something genuinely new on the fediverse, but multiple new things that work for different people, and all of them beyond the solutions we had before.clearly we don’t need to replicate the algorithms made to maximise ‘impressions’ so those numbers can be quoted to advertisers. and there’s no reason to just replicate reverse chronological and never do anything else. (even though it makes a good baseline standard, i believe.)just recently, i saw someone present their timeline like a messaging program: a list of contacts that each updates with new messages instead of a single stream containing all. does that work for me? no. but it makes sense for someone and they built it. and that’s cool.

@john yeah, matplotlib is clunky as heck and very involved to use. on the up side, if you put your mind to it, you can plot pretty much whatever you wish. (i once used it for comparisons in bending profile between different bow limb designs. it caused me a lot of pain and i’m still discovering new grey hairs i must’ve grown that day.)my everyday go-to is seaborn, which produces pretty graphs with more or less a single call, as long as what you have matches the way it wants its data.

@liaizon @Mastodon full agree – it’s the exact wrong approach to take.bringing people into a decentralised network means they will have to have some understanding of it. streamlining that away only solves a superficial problem and creates a fundamental one.i know it’s hip to think that everything must have a highly simplistic interface and having to think is seen as a failure of design, but that does not hold true when gaining an understanding is an inherent part of the task to solve. you can’t abstract that away and expect to solve it.all that is going to happen is that we’ll be stuck mimicking centralisation, and mimicking the models of the centralised social networks. instead of moving beyond both.

@rabia_elizabeth @actuallyautistic thank you for linking that, it was a most interesting read!it also jives with a thought i’ve been nurturing for a while now. i suspected that i am locating ‘identity’ at a different epistemological layer than neurotypicals: where it is common to see the self as one thing in a world of things, i always erred on the side of feeling the self as the point opposite the world of things, as the stage on which the phenomena describing the world happen. and the self-as-a-part-of-the-world only happens in the phenomena on that stage. they enter stage right, so to say, and speak of things, some of which affect me. and i do like some of those described things more than others (and am super duper into some of them!), but at the end of the day, my self is more the stage on which that happens rather than the play performed on it.hence i always struggled a bit with gender as well – not in terms of understanding it as a varied spectrum, or which parts of that spectrum i find more likeable, but in terms of not getting the importance of putting my ‘me’ on a spot on that spectrum where it reads as ‘is like this’ and ‘is not like that’ – when what i feel to be my true self exists only as itself, and all those axes of differentiation can only happen within the play, between characters, but not on the stage. i have only me. and even saying ‘ah, i must be agender’ places me too much inside the play to describe my true, inner me-ness.

@Are0h as a nice person just told a streamer with a frequent annoying internet dingus problem: ‘if your word in this conversation didn’t matter, people wouldn’t be shitting themselves in your YT comments.’

@Are0h yup. it’s always them telling on themselves. like that cartoon with the conservative going ‘oh you know which ones’ when pressed to say which conservative values he feels he’s getting censored for.
