Sometimes I reflect on how many "convenient" tech things in my life actually cause more disruptive wrangling to function than their older counterparts, and then I get rather angry.

@aehdeschaine Should we talk about people's sick love for Google Docs and associated tools ? ๐

@CitizenWald ๐ Sure, if it's the professional committee I'm on who uses Docs for all (ALL) work and even some resources linked publicly from our website. We own nothing.

@aehdeschaine Yup, for a start. From the ethical to the practical and the aesthetic....And isn't group editing fun?But back to wireless sound: yes, sometime I find (and I'm very comfortable with tech and can figure most things out) a Bluetooth just does not connect when there is no obvious problem with the device, no competing device trying to pair etc.

@CitizenWald That's exactly it. I'm also pretty comfortable, but these things are just engineered to not care. And the audio (unless I'm in a Zoom meeting or something) is even a minor issue compared to my wireless keyboard and trackpad. With one charging cable, it's sure a fun time to troubleshoot when the Bluetooth goes out! What was I thinking?! Sleek means nothing without function....That's it. I'm buying wired earbuds right now.

This post inspired by the fact that I cannot just listen through headphones right now because my wireless earbuds won't connect. I miss wires. Bluetooth can go screw.

I am sometimes alarmed that it took me three decades of starry-eyed-tech-joy to decide I actually hated the idea that I might get locked out of something because an RFID reader would fail where a Yale would just go in the lock. Better late Luddite than never, I suppose.

@aehdeschaine Well, I haven't turned Luddite yet, but it is certainly true that simpler is sometimes just fine or even better. One reason Soviet tanks were effective in WWII was because they were robust and simple. Or, take the codex, for example: seems to work pretty well under all conditions except maybe flood and inferno

@CitizenWald I have seen a number of arguments against physical, and in favor of electronic, books on Mastodon (the tech-heavy population, maybe, though you'd think they'd know better), and I always have to just close the tab. Preference is one thing, but preservation is a lot more complex than most people want to admit.Showed my digital collections mgr hubby somebody arguing that an ebook will be way more readable in 100 yrs than a printed one, and I thought he was going to cry.

@aehdeschaine Yes, that's insane. Look at how many media transformations we've been through: floppy, microfloppy, CD, CD-ROM (and anyone remember the twelve-inch laserdisc?). Preservation is a nightmare because (don't need to tell you this), even if the media remain usable (huge if), you'd need a whole array of equipment (or emulation tools) to use them. Amazing the techies, of all people, would not get this

@CitizenWald I think there's a difference between tech-lovers and tech-knowledgeable folk.

@aehdeschaine @CitizenWald Yeah, physical print/art media will ๐ฎ๐น๐๐ฎ๐๐ outlast electronic. I only use an e-reader because we simply can't carry the physical books with us; it doesn't mean I don't prefer to hold a book.

@aenesidemusoz @aehdeschaine Yes, I read books on my phone when I travel: nothing against tech.

@CitizenWald I'm looking right now at a five-year-old external drive full of perfectly normal, still-supported files that I can't open because the drive won't even spin up and I just have to pray the data will be intact when I finally try to excavate it. A century?! Please.

@CitizenWald @aenesidemusoz Same here! I have lots of ebooks. When I was commuting in Boston, they were SO much easier than trying to juggle a print book on the T. Plus, I can annotate them without marking up a book I'm not ready to. I just make sure to own print copies of all my favorites, too.

@CitizenWald @aenesidemusoz How absolutely horrible. We've heard some things, but this is an astonishing list. My commute was always a bit of a crapshoot, but this list... That is not a healthy city transportation system.
