Trying to get my users to understand that our chat server (XMPP) is not tied to any particular client, has been an ongoing challenge for years. We're using Gajim on our PCs, Conversations on phones, and Inverse as a web client. Users are still convinced that none of these can talk to each other, so they only use Gajim on their PCs, and assume that they have to go without on phones. When I try to explain it, they are completely dumbfounded, and still don't understand.#XMPP #Fediverse1/3

This is the mindset that has been created by corporations like Yahoo, Google, Facebook and Twitter. At one time, all of these services, with the exception of Twitter, were using XMPP as the back end for their chat systems before switching over to their own, proprietary service. This mindset is also the reason that Mastodon, and any Fediverse related services, completely perplex most internet users.2/3

The idea of a free and open, decentralized internet has been completely trained out of people, hence, the email analogy, which still failed miserably when trying to explain how Mastodon works.I hope that the migration forced by the bird site crashing and burning will be the start of changing this mindset. I'm sure though, that the corporate machine is already working hard at preventing that, and trying to buy-out and own the Fediverse.Just a random thought for your Monday.3/3
