Fire and Emergency in Auckland are under a lot of pressure. Fire and Emergency is urging Aucklanders to only call 111 if life is in danger as it deals with an increasing number of calls for help with flooding.Fire crews are dealing with over 1000 calls for assistance, but many of these relate to flooded property. Crews are prioritising calls where people are in danger and need to be rescued. Please stay home and only drive if the trip is absolutely essential.

Vector is working with Civil Defence and NZTA on how to get through, but these areas are likely to be without power for some considerable time. We advise customers to prepare themselves for extended outages in the areas where access is cut-off.(ENDS)

Further info from Air NZ in particular:Air NZ international flights will not resume until midday Sunday.Basically there's a heck of a lot of damage to various systems that's gonna require more extensive clean up, and they don't believe those will be ready by 5am. Hence they've madet he call that none of their international flights will go until at least midday.

The TL;DR for the whole North Island at the moment is basically: weather is extremely shit. In some places it's also really dangerous. There is a lot of damage to roads in particular.Wherever you are, look after yourselves and each other. Make sure you've got up to date, accurate info, and don't take unnecessary chances. If you think "maybe I should charge the things or bottle some water" just do it. "She'll be right mate" is NOT a plan. Ask for help if you need it.
