It hurts me so much that hate in general and in particular against groups of people seems more and more accepted since our extensive social media use these daysI cannot imagine how terrible it must be on 'the receiving end' but I want to do all what I can to stop this and turn the tablesIt's NOT okay to spread hate off- or online and we should not accept that

When the definition of hate is more narrowly and clearly defined than it currently is, it is easier to get support from the community in helping to isolate those instances of hate

@stux It’s something I will never understand! I dislike people if they’re horrible people. I don’t care who/what they are or believe in (ok, religious people are weird (joke)🤣😂) except for people who identify as cats etc....that is just something that needs sorting out I’m afraid.

@stux agreed, however it’s not usage that’s the problem, it’s the algorithm that amplifies hate speech. Commercial social media is the problem. The last 6 years I’ve been here in the fediverse and I’ve not experienced any hate events. However, my faf.social instance is heavily curated and sources moderated.

@stux Someone who cannot hate has nothing that they love enough to defend. Although, I doubt that's what you mean, I'm thinking more along the lines of "lunatics getting their fantasies pissed upon" probably.

@stux It's exhausting. Some hate is getting worse, Spanky took the brakes off of decency; some is getting more attention while other hate that has always been there gets little attention. Indigenous voices need more amplification, for instance. The discovery of the residential school unmarked children's graves in Canada was a huge shock for the majority who weren't aware of the existence of these schools because that wasn't taught in schools, didn't get press...

@stux the hate was weaponized. First it had to be accepted, then normalized, and finally expected. It’s almost mainstream now, and that’s ugly and sad but entirely intentional. Solutions? I don’t know but I think… We cannot “fight” hatred, the word alone contains a breath of antagonism. It needs to be offset by tipping the scales. Only way to do that is by putting forth more peace, love, empathy and understanding… until the messages of hate are entirely drowned out.Love must be louder 🙏💜💙✌️

@stux Hate is most often a result of suffering fear.Fear is most often a result of ignorance.In most (not all) cases, hate can be prevented by curing ignorance.This is why those with fascistic ambitions attack education. It causes friction in generating the hate-energy of their movement.(This isn't a philosophical musing, but a structural observation - and something born-out in our mapping of the human emotional landscape...)

@stux Close to sixty years ago, my uncle's house was firebombed, because he had a black African priest staying with him for a week or two. It didn't do much damage, but it was pretty terrifying. The school where my parents attended was bombed multiple times, again, mostly ineffectually.That was the reality of being Catholic in a part of the USA where the Klan was politically influential.

@stux I know too many people who just end up really toxic irl, like the social media's made a mark on them. One of them was a close friend who's now a total stranger who bullies the people I care about. Honestly, I wish people would just stop tearing each other apart and either spread love or just leave people alone if you've got nothing good to say.

@stux I have to wonder: is hate speech really more prevalent today, or just more visible to the rest of us than before?* I realise social media makes it so much easier to launch hate, long distance, at strangers 😭 ... but I just assumed this was a revealing of what was there all along - which we (conveniently) assumed didn't exist. #thinking* and hopefully, harder to turn a blind eye to.

@stux PS: I'm with you 100% on stopping it in social media, whenever we can. I like the Fedi idea of "quarantine" and, well used, I hope it helps as the bird app refugees (like me, and the trolls too) migrate over ...👍
