Some context to Phil Schiller (@pschiller) joining the Fediverse, and why this is so important:1. Phil has been an executive at Apple since 1997, notably as a VP of Marketing 2. He's been incredibly visible at many Keynotes, namely the launch of the iPhone and iPad3. He's credited with coming up with the iPod's clickwheel interface4. He boosted this post from @ivory—which could be interpreted as an endorsement

I know several people, mostly Apple fans, who said they would never join the Fediverse unless @gruber was active. And now with @pschiller here, more might come along. Among Apple fans, Phil Schiller has lots of street cred. For example, he's credited with the iPod's clickwheel interface.

While I appreciate what Apple has done in terms of design, I'm not a fan of their walled garden approach.Specifically, I'm an Apple skeptic. Nevertheless, this is how it goes. Apple users often don't adopt tech until someone associated with Apple does the same. And I believe that the Fediverse will eventually eat away at Big Social.

Here's the way I see it: when purveyors of walled gardens join the Fediverse, that's an indictment of walled gardens. Employees at Apple, Google, and Microsoft are here because, ironically, the Fediverse cannot be controlled by one entity. They like us because we are what they're not!

I have no doubt that the Fediverse is incredibly tempting to Big Tech firms. After all, open standards mean the likes of Apple can build whatever they want upon the Fediverse too!The technological nihilist will throw up their hands and say building the Fediverse is already a lost cause. But open standards cuts both ways!Apple can build what they want—but they can't tell *me* what and how to build what I want!

@atomicpoet I'd see Apple encouraging the fediverse because they are not and don't want to be in the social space. But they have near peer competitors who are. So a healthy fediverse costs them nothing, and undermines the position of their competitors for talent. It is also aligned with their general privacy marketing to be on your own instances or a community not-adds based instance.

Apple isn't encouraging the Fediverse. Did we forget already what they did to fedi apps right after Jan 6?

Threatened with being banned from the App Store if we didn't ban/censor certain fedi content and forcibly display server rules / content policies (but weirdly not every app I was involved with was forced to do this part)
