Looking for info. After the C128 landed, were 80-column PETSCII BBSs a thing, or is that more a recent construct of tweaked terminal emulation -- just PETSCII 40 at twice the horizontal resolution? Does PETSCII 80 behave exactly as PETSCII 40 from a terminal emulator perspective? Thanks.#C64 #C128 #BBSing @particlesbbs

@blakespot @particlesbbs That is probably a good question for @particlesbbs The first time I experienced 80 column PETSCII was within the last decade on Particles BBS. I'm pretty sure it was around in some form well before that, but I had not experienced it.

@paradroyd @blakespot 80 column PETSCII is exactly the same as 40 column.

@paradroyd @blakespot Actually, also, there are a bit of color differences because the VDC chip maps them differently.

@particlesbbs @blakespot For my part, I wasn't really thinking about the color so much because the first place I really used PETSCII in 80 columns was in 64 Door on the Amiga anyway. It was more whether many BBSs actually catered to 80 column displays and intended things to be rendered that way.Of course you can render any PETSCII on an 80 column PETSCII screen, but 90 some-odd percent of the time, you're going to get a screen with everything shifted off to the left half of the screen.

@paradroyd @particlesbbs Ok, so there aren't a lot of 80-col PETSCII boards out there (like Particles)?

@blakespot @particlesbbs Not that I've run across. There are a -lot- of BBSs out there though. More than most people think. I tend to call a few a lot. I seldom go looking for new ones just because there are only so many hours in a day. I work full time and typically BBS for at most a couple of hours late at night. With that in mind it stands to reason that I haven't even seen most of them, and that the ones I call aren't necessarily representative of the others out there, now or in the past.

@blakespot Another thing to remember is that to many people, Particles is a 40 column PETSCII-based BBS, because that's the only way they experience it. To others, it's an 80 column ANSI BBS. It is fully all of these things.Unless they call there with a variety of clients in different formats they might never know that.Particles is one of the BBSs I call that pulls this off very well. Mad World is another. Most really target a single format, and maybe drop back to ASCII for everything else.

@paradroyd Right. Another multi-format is/was Dura-Europos. But...I can't seem to connect anymore. It may be gone from the world. :-\ I enjoyed it a while ago.dura-bbs.org:6359
