Following on @pluralistic's brilliant article about the "enshittification" process of companies, I added in something that I thought was missing from Cory's analysis: the role of "The Friedman Doctrine" that the only thing companies should work for are maximizing profits for shareholers... and highlighting how that leaves out not just other stakeholders, but the important variable of "over what time frame."https://www.techdirt.com/2023/01/24/how-the-friedman-doctrine-leads-to-the-enshittification-of-all-things/

@mmasnick and @pluralistic Thank you both as, your separate but connected, thought pieces made a critical connection for me w/in the context of Interoperability. If interoperability (including adversarial interop) is the anti-dote to enshittification, it makes sense that platforms and incumbent vendors with market share to lose will actively try to subvert the process of developing and defining open standards that ensure that interoperabilityhttps://www.cyberforge.com/politics-of-standards/And they will also try to divert and subvert any potential technology, that they were not involved in developing and controlling, that has the promise of true, global interoperability, as is also happening right now in the #DigitalIdentity ecosystem https://www.cyberforge.com/battle-for-the-brand/

@aniltj @mmasnick @pluralistic FWIW, The Steam Deck as sold by Valve is voluntarily interoperable. You can repair, modify, and install external OSes on the Steam Deck. Hell, Valve even provides instructions as to install windows on it. https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1675200/view/3131696199122435099This is far preferable to Apple's and Nintendo's ban on interoperability on their portable devices (though Apple was forced into making iOS interoperable by European laws and regulators; I hope the US gets interoperability too!).

@IronCurtain @aniltj @mmasnick @pluralistic Which is fantastic, but such a rare choice for companies to make.I love it both from a consumer rights standpoint and also an environmental one. That can help keep older devices from becoming e-waste not just with repairs to broken parts, but also uploading new software which can extend the usefulness of old hardware. Like putting ChromeOS on an old windows laptop, and getting more years of useful performance out of it.

@Biohazardous @aniltj @mmasnick @pluralistic I think the reason Apple and Nintendo don't have interoperability is–as Mike Masnick astutely observed–due to the short-term goal of maximizing shareholder's bottom lines. The reason Valve can do such a thing is that they're private and have no Wall Street concerns.
