Why do I have a #SpeedLimiter on my #EBike but not on my car?Is the version of me who drives a multi-ton metal box just assumed to be less of a threat to others than the me who pedals along completely exposed on a 60lb #bicycle with a motor that's less powerful than a travel hairdryer? And if so why and thanks.#BikeTooter

@DrTCombs Because you're allowed to co-exist with cyclists on bike facilities at bicycle speeds, and you aren't able to hit motorcycle speeds on proper roads where you can take out pedestrians while not carrying any insurance or any mechanism (a license) that can be revoked if you repeatedly do so.

I will clarify that I'm a-ok with a speed limiter on my bike I'm absolutely not ok with cars that can be driven ten times faster

@DrTCombs I wouldn't take it personally, corporations care about money, not you. It's a decision made on a liability basis I'm sure. One of the prime demographics of e-bikes is court-ordered license suspendees. The limiter is there for the company to protect themselves against lawsuits from drunks putting themselves in a ditch.

@binaryphile @DrTCombs Companies would gladly sell 100mph unlicensed e-bikes, it's government regulation that prevents that.

@alrsIt's not the speed limiters on the bikes that are the problem. It's their absence on cars.@binaryphile

@DrTCombs @binaryphile I don't care about people blasting across the Nevada desert at 40mph over the limit, I care about people going 5mph over the limit on the streets where I ride. Limiters on cars do nothing for that.
