A #Russian frigate carrying #Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles is going to be joining naval exercises with #China and #SouthAfrica in February. From the Wikipedia page for the Zircon: "Its Mach 9 speed means that it cannot be intercepted by existing missile defence systems and its precision makes it lethal to large targets such as aircraft carriers."Between drones and the fact that the US, China, and Russia all have missiles capable of taking them out, #AircraftCarriers may be as obsolete now as battleships were in WWII.As an aside, I'm pretty sure #Gorshkov is not "Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union".https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/1/23/russian-warship-to-join-drills-with-china-south-africa

@freakazoid Tanks might be going that way too, with cheap, automated loitering munitions able to attack the top armor.

@alan8325 @freakazoid Though we could see a new type of carrier evolve. Drone swarms will likely need some kind mothership and command/relay platform that would be able to get near the conflict zone. Submarines are still pretty stealthy and hard to attack. Perhaps a submarine drone carrier is the next step.

@alan8325 Naval superiority is the US's biggest advantage, though. Making its carrier fleet useless in favor of small, fast, cheap drone carriers could cause a significant shift in the balance of power.

@freakazoid I highly doubt a new generation of submarine drone carriers would be cheap. Imagine something the size of a Columbia-class SSBN, which is $9.15 Billion/unit (A Nimitz carrier is $10.1B/unit), that carries drones mission-tailored to nautical and deep-strike missions. Sure, small, cheap ones can and will be made, but probably for different use cases and probably not here!

@alan8325 I doubt they need to be submarines. Large numbers of small ships are also hard to take out.I also think difficult-to-attribute warfare is going to be a major factor. Have you read Daniel Suarez's book Kill Decision?
