Fellow #trans folks: think before boosting "look at this transphobia" toots that aren't CW'ed. I do this myself and need to get better at it; my feed EXPLODING with the same un-CW'ed kick in the head repeatedly as multiple accounts boost it is.... a thing that would be doing way less psychic damage if it were CW'ed with a useful label.

(I periodically filter "transphobia" on birdsite just to reduce the volume of yelling about it from an all-encompassing roar to a din; I don't want to do it here but realize I'm probably going to have to for my own mental health.)

Back in the 20th century we typically consumed news at a certain time of day for a certain period of time - however long it takes to read the paper or 30 minutes for network television news or 60 if you wanted the affiliate news too. That meant if something Bad was going on you had plenty of time to brace yourself and then you'd either read the article or watched the bit and it was out of your face and you had time to digest it.

As we've gone more and more Online, the bad (actually bad and rage-baiting) news has escaped confinement and runs rampant, firehosing psychic damage all over the place 24/7. It is actually exhausting, which is why so many people have experienced mental health improvements as their time on birdsite has declined (or ceased completely).

CW'ing keeps a bit of that 20th century "I know there's badness here and I can brace myself for it before {reading|watching} it."*Not* CWing continues the birdsite tradition of being a constant drip of random radioactive mental health damage. It doesn't have to be like that. And if you're trying to rally support and disseminate information, ask yourself: are you *intentionally* wearing down your target audience, or is it a bad habit you can do something about?
