I saw Avatar 2 on Sunday. It was a shame to waste all those movie-making skills on a script so sexist, culturally tone-deaf and tropey that it could be from a bad 50s western. I squirmed the whole way through, broken only by the occasional tuning to my wife and rolling my eyes (and of course a loo break in the middle).It's pretty strange that its a James Cameron film... I usually think of him as being a feminist director (but I'm probably only considering his best work).#avatar #sucks

@john The first Avatar script also sucked. Not surprising since Cameron had written it in two weeks. I doubt this one has taken much longer. He's known as a director who mostly cares about the tech, for whom actors are just props.

@john is it more tropey/racist/sexist than the first one? I generally like Cameron l, and Avatar had some really impressive world-building and visuals, but man… it really made me uncomfortable.

@AggroBoy it’s hard to say, because I haven’t watch the first one since I saw it in the theatre, but it did register as more sexist to me. ALL the female characters on the goodies side were emotionally wild/mysterious and had to be prevented from doing stupid emotional things by the more sensible men.And not having Sigourney Weaver hurt it.The racism seemed about the same.

@john Yes to that, but also the wasted opportunity for speculative biology bothers me. I know Cameron isn't going for truly alien beings, but every lifeform looked so dull...
