I’m amused to see folks saying that the #fediverse has “squandered” the opportunity presented by Twitter’s collapse. I have a very different take…There’s a ton of attention and energy in the ecosystem now, and it’s needed just to consolidate at the current level of use. The ecosystem can’t handle another order or magnitude jump right now.

So what’s happening right now? Well, - Medium just launched a Mastodon instance for their users.- Mozilla is working on a public instance.- Tumbler is adding ActivityPub support to their platform (and I suspect Medium will too). - Beyond that, the managed hosting providers are starting to re-open sign ups. We’ll see what it looks like in a year, but I think it’s gonna get more resilient, sort out the governance, and maintain slow & steady growth… until the next big jump.

Key Milestones for #Fediverse (WIP):1) Convene a critical mass of protocol hackers, server & client builders, instance admins and community representatives in way that can focus resources on key improvements.2) Major instances have transparent funding mechanisms that are sufficient to cover hosting costs. Expect a few will be ad-based3) Tumblr, Medium or another established platform adds native ActivityPub support and it works out.Feedback requested!#ActivityPubDev #FediverseAdmin

@PeterBronez @deadsuperhero 1. Share standards, information, resources (including money) and practices, don't build centralised institutions or gate-keeping blocs.Keep development distributed, diverse, forked and driven by community power.2. Not necessary, and … no ads as well please. I'd rather see instances support each other materially.3. This, but Tumblr or Medium implements ActivityPub, and no one cares much after day one.

@attentive @deadsuperhero thanks for the feedback!1. Agree that distributed development is generally good. I love the client & server diversity. But that only works with interoperability, and at some point you have to work on the protocol to keep that alive. How do we keep that core healthy?

@attentive @deadsuperhero2. Somebody, somewhere will turn to ads to fund their Instance. The big question is how aggressive they will be about it and how everyone else handles it.Do you defederate any instances that push ads into your feed? Probably. What if they just show ads to local users? Maybe, because you’re getting data mined. But freezing them out is regressive, not everyone can afford a social subscription. It’s gonna be a whole thing.

@attentive @deadsuperhero3. You think so? Is a pile of engineering work to throw away. I would engage with those platforms more if I could do it in this feed. You know who I’d _really _ like to see implement #ActivityPub? PagerDuty & all the other alerting platforms. @homeassistantThen beyond that, all the hella boring corporate stuff. Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics, GitHub… anything that ships a notification.
