Suddenly wondering how many people who staunchly defend their gas stoves would be concerned by bringing a propane tank and a camping stove into their kitchen.I bet it's a lot.

I should clarify, if you like cooking with gas fine. Whatever. But I do think that it's worth considering that if what I just explained feels kind of dangerous to you, imagine the propane tank is exchanged with a pipe that leads directly to a gas factory and there you go. It's exactly the same.

@TechConnectify I don't see a problem with that so long as the gas can leave the house AKA the stove vent isn't blocked off

We become numb to the risks that we are accustomed to, and that's quite natural. After all, it's extremely uncommon for gas leaks to happen in the grand scheme. But you and I literally have pressurized pipes in our homes filled with an explosive gas - and the supply behind that pipe is for all intents and purposes limitless. Fun!

@TechConnectify Well, if you bring a tank of gas, you have a security on the de-pressurizer and I think the same is true for city gas.Sure it's not perfect, but I don't think there is safe ways to have energy, electricity for example has quite similar problems.Or are people also all forgetting how explosive and flammable batteries are?

@TechConnectify why not bring gas tank to your car also? My dad had one and it was useless. Don't know how safe it was, it was cheaper but also our city had only few gas stations.

@TechConnectify What fuel is used by those little camp stove-looking things that I've seen used in indoor corporate cafeteria-type environments.

@jonhendry You're probably thinking of Sterno, which is a solid gel fuel. I don't know what that's called generically offhand

@TechConnectify No, it was in a metal bottle like the butane canister for my camp stove.

@jonhendry it could very well be butane, there are butane stoves

@TechConnectify Do you think they'd be any safer indoors than propane?(Uh, my tone here is just curious, not challenging.)

@jonhendry I mean ultimately, it's the quantity of the fuel that matters.I've not communicated this thought experiment very well, but I was imagining like a full-sized grill tank being brought into the kitchen. But maybe people would generally understand that that's not really any riskier them a standard gas stove, I just got the sense that people would be leery of that

@TechConnectify@mas.to @jonhendry@hachyderm.io Grill tank is small really. One of these sits in my parent's apartment kitchen. ~33kg of propane-butane mix. Everyone in the apartment complex has one.

@SocialistStan@mastodon.lol @TechConnectify@mas.to Not really. When there's no gas pipelines, people use these in kitchens for gas stoves. 33kg of gas.

@TechConnectify it's actually less uncommon than generally imagined. There were 40 domestic gas explosions with on average 1 injury or fatality per incident in the UK in 2021. I think the numbers are similar in Belgium and Germany where domestic natural gas is similarly common.Sure, that's a low per-household rate, but a not so low per-village/city rate.

@penguin42 maybe, the statistics weren't very detailed.Over here at least the most common reason is people "fixing" things in their houses themselves, most often on the heating or cooking systems. The supplier networks are generally maintained in good shape.@TechConnectify
