Been seeing a lot about #ChatGPT lately and got my first question at the library this week from someone who was looking for a book that the bot had recommended. They couldn't find it in our catalog. Turns out that ALL the books that ChatGPT had recommended for their topic were non-existent. Just real authors and fake titles cobbled together. And apparently this is known behavior. 😮

@bibliotecaria I had a similar reaction when I watched a person on YouTube ask ChatGPT to write malware. It made for a real wow moment until I realised the host made no effort to verify if the code could perform as promised.

@bibliotecaria Imagine the upset if real authors started publishing books with the same AI-generated titles.It's just as well you can't copyright a title but the bestsellers list would be a laugh.

@EggKnees @bibliotecaria In 1948, a fan wrote into Astounding Science Fiction magazine with reviews of the stories from the November, 1949 issue, more than a year in the future.The editor ran with it, and solicited stories with those titles from the listed authors, then published them in that issue.Clearly, someone needs to do this with a ChatGPT reference list.

@bibliotecaria I've seen it make up books, scientific papers, Linux commands, historical events, world series results, and cities in several states. chatGPT is the loquacious drunk at the end of the bar. Talks steadily, seems to make sense, fails the fact check.

A few comments about people who don't know that they're using #ChatGPT to do something it wasn't intended to do. "End users" will ALWAYS do surprising things with tools released for them to test out. Good data for OpenAI, I'm sure. It's going to be interesting to see where Microsoft takes it, since they've invested a lot of money in this. Some integration with Bing is in the works from what I understand.
