When people bring me crappy windows laptops and ask if I can make it faster and actually usable. I say yes and take out my #linuxmint USB drive and "fix it" for free. People are always amazed and happy. Even muggles can use #linux, I promise.

@codemonkeymikeI've been given six or seven different laptops from people not using them anymore; I install Linux on them, they work just fine (except they usually have battery issues), so I use them as home servers, for testing distros, or as sacrificial computers for projects.

@benjaminhollon @codemonkeymike I have so many old laptops laying around right now. I also have two big virtualization servers though, so I don't really have anywhere to make them useful. I put KDE Neon on an old 2014 13" MBP and it is really nice, actually. I should find someone who wants it and is willing to run linux. The screen is stunning (of course) but it's an I7 2-core/4-thread.

@stwhite @benjaminhollon @codemonkeymike old laptops with Linux are the perfect way to introduce kids into computing and a much healthier way than a smartphone IMO.You could easily use the hosts file to use whatever blocklist you'd like to.
