V interesting birdsite 🧵 by @scienceisstrat1 6 Toot 🧵 1/. A household fridge uses more energy in a year than the average person in some African countries (eg Kenya, Nairobi, Ethiopia). Africa will remain poor unless it uses more energy. “How energy poverty causes huge suffering in Africa, and how low-cost renewables could help accelerate the push to electrify Africa. 590 million people, or about half of sub-Saharan Africans, currently do not have access to electricity. “

2/. “Partially as a result of extreme energy poverty, per capita incomes in sub-Saharan Africa are a tiny fraction of levels in most of the rest of the world. Per capita income just over $3k a year.It is perhaps no surprise that African per capita emissions of CO2 are currently a tiny fraction of what they are in the rest of the worldAfrica’s cumulative emissions per capita are also minuscule, barely registering as compared with other major countries and continents. “

3/. “ Energy poverty has a devastating impact on education in Africa (source: @WorldBank). Energy poverty also dramatically limits the availability of cold storage in Africa. This had a deleterious impact on Africa’s ability to distribute C-19 vaccines, and has negative consequences for the provision of health care in Africa more generally. Energy poverty also has a negative impact on food security in Africa, contributing to lower agricultural productivity and increased food spoilage.”

4/. “Energy poverty has also restricted Africa’s ability to build a manufacturing economy, despite having access to low cost labor and being physically proximate to major markets. On the plus side, Africa has greater solar power potential than any other continent - by far. The radical decline in the cost of solar and battery storage make the technologies increasingly viable as an option to close the energy deficit in many African countries.”

What do you mean, "Had also..."???There's absolutely no context for whatever it is you're trying to say!It sounds like something I'd like to understand, but... Subject and Predicate Please!Oh I see what's going on here. You must be one of those naive #twitugees - yup, this is one of those 1 of 2 of 3 of constellated posts that are impossible to read because of all the messages in between your drivel in reverse chronological order. For cryin' out loud!I'm NOT going to hunt around and try to reassemble your reverse chronologically segmented diatribe obliterated by all the other Fediverse traffic in between each of those posts! You have no idea what that looks like to everyone else on the global Fediverse streams do you?I dunno how #Twatter works, but here in the #Fediverse if you have something of any length to say then you certainly don't use mastodon to do it - you get an account on a Fediverse server platform that is more capable and designed for authoring average and lengthy posts and articles. You can still keep all of your contacts and friends, and you can still make short little posts too.The Fediverse is the Fediverse and the networking works the same no matter what platform you're using - plus, more people will actually bother to read what you have to say if you just put each article into a single post regardless of how lengthy it is. I think you had something informative and interesting to read but you butchered it. Looking in another tab, I see as many as 11 posts by others separating your #HellThread, and that is truly sad that you think It's coherent. For you? I recommend you get off that mastodon instance, it doesn't serve your needs, and instead get an account on a #Friendica server; that will suit you nicely.Or a #Misskey or #Soapbox or #Calckey or #Pleroma or a #Hometown server. Any one of those will do nicely for you (and they're all more feature complete than mastodon).I don't mean to come off as being so harsh, but you're certainly not being a very neighborly Fediverse user scattering #unintelligible #refuse about the network like a #litterbug - especially when it would probably otherwise be something that many of us would find relevant and interesting.I'm dropping a link here where there's a plethora of resources that you can choose from to create an account without that stupid 500 character limit you're trying so hard to unsuccessfully circumvent. Please stop doing that. People that have been here for many years find it distasteful to say the least, and it just comes out like garbage on the busy timelines of other servers.Remember that all this attention to what the theme of your local server is about is barely significant at all - you're actually communicating across the world with people across tens of thousands of servers and you would be best advised to be on pretty much any decently administered server that is stable than trying to broham up with a bunch of folks locally that you'll interface with much less, and no matter what server you're on, you can always go and make friends on any other server you want anyway. Please be a good #netizen by observing common #netiquette in the Fediverse 👍I hope that helps, and again, I apologize for #harshing on you like that, but most of that kind of posting behavior was curtailed a long time ago, before all this new #Twatter #migration #landrush #nonsense happened a couple of months ago and people started complaining about it all over again. Please help in sparing us all from these #inconsiderate behavioral patterns all over again.Mastodon is far from the only option in the Fediverse, and it's certainly not the best (if there is one, lol), it serves its purpose well enough though, and that means sending out little blips of 500 characters or less in plain text, without any formatting and I can see that simply doesn't meet your needs... at all.I hope you have a lovely day, and when you find another server that accomodates the requirements for your journalism, do look me up because I'd be happy to read some of your articles 🙂Now here's that link, and like I said, Friendica might be a great match for you and it also has two way interfaces with #Twatter, #Diaspora, and other networks and features like #RSS, groups, chat, and... There's just too much to mention. And feel free to DM me to as I'm be happy to answer any questions I can to help 👍https://write.as/tallship/making-better-use-of-spaceI hope that helps 🙂#tallship ⛵.

5/. “ The decline in solar power costs has already led to a huge surge in off-grid solar solutions spreading throughout Africa, esp solar lighting. In terms of solar energy installation, the majority of solar deployment in Africa has occurred in just one country, South AfricaAfrica also has significant wind resources in large parts of the continent despite low current capacity (6.5 GW as of 2020). “Annual average wind speeds in N Africa & Southern Africa are high, reaching 7m per sec.”

6/ “ As an example of what’s coming, Egypt just signed a deal to build one of the world’s largest wind farms:▫️ 10-GW onshore plant by 2030Egyptian government will buy the power, some of which will be exported to Europe, Saudi Arabia, Sudan & LibyaWhy is this all important, above & beyond the obvious reasons?Keep in mind that Africa already has 1.3 bill people. But according to UN forecasts, that number is set to radically increaseAfrica’s future will in many ways be humanity’s future.
