Mastodon Peeps: Help! In about a month I'm having a class embark on a project to explore the functions and topical connections of Mastodon as user experiences. I have my goals and prep well laid out (in prior years this exercise has used Twitter, moving it here for reasons of ethics and technical elegance) but I need your help with a jump point.Do you have any suggestions about which server I should have the students use to start? I'm pinging some admins to see about available space. Thanks!

@josh hmm... > explore the functions and topical connections of Mastodon as user experiencesHow about just spreading them wildly through the fediverse?Different server software (Mastodon, Pleroma, Misskey), different number of users (few, many), based on the server activity (few posts per user, many posts per user) and it would probably be interesting from a scientific point of view to distribute them also on politically not like-minded / instances with different topics instances.

@josh I would suggest giving them a list of potential servers with descriptions of the different instances. Then let them compare and contrast the experiences on the different instances. The differences will probably astound them.

@brass75 Dan, I very thoughtfully weighed this option but decided the best plan from a readiness perspective was to have them all start at the same place and start exploring. Instead, I will ask them to at least identify three other servers to which they might want to move and explain why from a perspective of information quality and network connections ... or they can actually switch servers and make a comparison between their first and second server experiences.

@josh @brass75 no, i dont recommend this. The reason for this is that those with large instances get caught up in the large instances themselves and do not find the depths of the Fediverse at all. As an example of such behaviour, I can take you myself. There is no Mastodon network, only the Fediverse with different server software. You yourself seem to refer to all users in the Fediverse as Mastodon peeps, which is itself an indication that you have not yet explored the depths yourself.

@josh do not refer to me as a mastodong. I identify as a pleroman.
