@Archivist I toot about my research and teaching. And I'm definitely keeping tabs on colleagues around the world here, we're all sharing. When I share my work that's not unlike advertising, it's sharing but it's inarguably self-promotion. Oh man what if Amazon started paying employees to toot, "What a great day I had working at Amazon today ... I saw this awesome [product] on the shelf. Anyway." ???*shudder*

@Archivist Anthropology is as much unlearning as learning. Humans have always had mental constructs of other ppl (& always will, it's a function of consciousness). So the rub of anthropology is to explore what we can learn empirically about the human experience; in the past w/ancient data; in the present w/diverse dialogs & cultural relativism. To paraphrase the anthropologist Wade Davis, "Other people aren't failed attempts at being you." So unlearning received ethnocentrism & bias is vital.

@cfiesler this is also an important element of NSF GRFP consideration … NSF generally considers holistic undergraduate experience regarding potential of students to be a good investment for long term graduate funding in order to grow the next generation of research leaders.

Mastodon Peeps: Help! In about a month I'm having a class embark on a project to explore the functions and topical connections of Mastodon as user experiences. I have my goals and prep well laid out (in prior years this exercise has used Twitter, moving it here for reasons of ethics and technical elegance) but I need your help with a jump point.Do you have any suggestions about which server I should have the students use to start? I'm pinging some admins to see about available space. Thanks!

@brass75 Dan, I very thoughtfully weighed this option but decided the best plan from a readiness perspective was to have them all start at the same place and start exploring. Instead, I will ask them to at least identify three other servers to which they might want to move and explain why from a perspective of information quality and network connections ... or they can actually switch servers and make a comparison between their first and second server experiences.

NPR quits Twitter. Good. Now it’s time for every actual government account to cut the bird cord. There needs to be a social.gov server where federal accounts can post news and alerts without supporting an increasingly abusive misinformation company.https://apple.news/AWC-wJNy3RBO-dY4nh2hwkA

My uni is now 18mo into complete Microsoft office management ecosystem. I might be the only person on campus who understands the functional differences and overlaps in user behaviors between Teams, OneDrive, and SharePoint. File organization, sharing are now Lovecraftian nightmares of non-Euclidean chthonic geometries, with multiple local administrative and departmental jargons to describe ritual practices. My concerns voiced to admins treated like gibbering madness #AcademicChatter #HigherEd
