Hi everybody, I’m ready to unveil my year-end-holiday-hack project:Meet Searchtodon: ***Private*** Timeline Search for MastodonIt fills a gap that I have been missing over on Twitter as well: “I remember seeing this THING, where was that again?”It is built with privacy and consent in mind (pls see the FAQ), but is also *an experiment* to see if something like this is accepted by the larger Mastodon community. Here goes: https://searchtodon.social

@janl Why does it need *write* access? (Yes, I've read the FAQ; but does it mean Elk offers no way to be read-only?)

I want to be very upfront: if this is something the community rather not have, I’ll shut it down. But, I think there are three hypotheses worth exploring:1. User experience: can this be done in a way that users want?2. Operational feasibility: how much extra burden would this be on instance operators?3. Community: is this something Mastodon folks at large are comfortable with.

And just to spell it out: this is not harvesting the Fediverse. There is no AI, there is no VC and very likely no monetisation strategy at all.

Oh, and also also thanks to @timbray for doing the hard work of guiding my choices around community consent: https://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/202x/2022/12/30/Mastodon-Privacy-and-Search as well as @darius who helped privately.

@bortzmeyer Elk is 0.4.0 and two months old, let’s not chide it for niche features. 100% ok if you don’t trust this yet.

@janl shut up and take my moneySeriously, nice work. On Twitter I used search mainly to find my own stuff (or stuff I've seen) and it's tragic that Mastodon doesn't have that built-in.

@thomasfuchs @janl Choose an instance that enabled the Elasticsearch backend and you can search in your own toots as well as all toots you ever interacted with. Full text. Mastodon has this feature, you just need to find an admin willing to pay the bill (elasticsearch is quite hungry)

@defnull did you ever tried? It works very bad, lol. Unrelevant results, plus sorted in random order@thomasfuchs @janl

@janl why is opt-in such a hard concept for folks? By default it should not cache at all and if it does only because someone put #CacheOk in their profile If you actually cared about people's privacy this would be opt-in

@c0debabe I don’t think it’s a hard concept at all. But with nobody having opted in, the search would be useless and we wouldn't get any positive signal for folks wanting this (there now is). I hope we can have this part of instances if it continues to be useful for people, so the original trust relationship is restored. — Thank you for taking the time to engage and comment.

@c0debabe @janl if the service is useless when consent is required then the service is non-consent driven and is a bad idea in general. 🤷‍♀️

@janl You already know it's something the community would rather not have. That's why you're couching this in such defensive language and bracing to get resistance from #Fediblock. Now every user who doesn't want their toots cached on an external system they don't even know followers are using has to add nosearch tags to their bio? How secure is your storage? And just creating this sets a precedent others will emulate. Not sold on this at all. Go back to Twitter. #Mastodon #search

As promised, here’s an update on Searchtodon.I have shut it down & deleted all data (as of 14:06 CET today). As implemented, it does not gel *with* the Mastodon community, although the functionality did prove useful to a lot of people.I’m working on a retrospective that hopefully can inform future experimenters. Thanks everybody for giving it a try and for all your constructive feedback!
