Dear #ActivityPub experts: if a video platform federates with ActivityPub, should its `Create` activities have with `Video` objects or `Note` objects with Videos as attachments the way posting a video on Mastodon does?Would Mastodon know what to do if it received a `Create`->`Video` activity? Should the sending server adapt what it sends to the known capabilities of the receiving server?

Confirming that Mastodon does not know what to do with a Video as a top-level entity over the wire. You have to send a Video packaged as an attachment of a Note for Mastodon to be able to render it. In the screenshots, my Mastodon server accepted the first but discarded the second.I'm just thinking about how neat it would be to have a TikTok-like server where people could interact with your videos from their favorite fediverse app.#ActivityPub

@jamie Uploading video to peertube, will federate to Mastodon as they are both Activity pub, you can reply on here and the reply will be federated back to peertube.Not sure if that helps.

@jamie But I agree that a tiktok interface would make a lot more sense for the type of videos being uploaded, peertube is better for longer viceos, perhaps a more formal series.However would it be possible to have a tiktok style interface that either uploads to peertube or simply modify peertube to allow for this too.

@jamie I am not sure how they did it but BookWyrm sends a view tailored to mastodon of book reviews but internally uses its own to show more data that mastodon doesn't know what to do with

@liaizon @jamie yikes — if for every N consumers and M publishers there exists a dedicated interoperability protocol… activity pub sure means a lot less at that point.

@robacarp @liaizon I assumed they didn't mean Mastodon specifically but instead AP in general

@jamie @robacarp @liaizon #ActivityPub is a #LinkedData protocol, and while #ActivityStreams offers basic primitives for building social networking apps, it does not mean that every interaction should be using AS.Every particular domain might define their own AP vocabulary extensions tailored for specific app types. They have to agree on both msg formats and msg exchange heuristics.The dominance of Mastodon sees most fedi devs trying to be compatible in this Microblogging domain.

@smallcircles @robacarp @liaizon Indeed, any time interoperability is a goal, tradeoffs may need to be made.And since a lot of folks don't want to have a bunch of different accounts for different platforms (many want to consume everything in their Mastodon feed), interoperability is a great goal to have. I don't know if it's feasible yet, but it was the driving force behind my question.

@jamie @smallcircles @robacarp @liaizon i find it strange that people want to do everything from one account. I chat with you all here because you have interesting ideas, but I don’t share my personal life here. If I was using the fediverse to connect with friends I’d want that walled off, completely private. I guess that *could * be achieved from one account if you had more posting controls over who sees what, and timeline separation?

@jamie @smallcircles @robacarp @liaizon but that feels like it’d just be a mess. I’d rather have one client with multiple accounts that I can be concurrently signed in to, and quickly switch between - like how Slack works. Each account would have a different interface depending on what type of account it was. So I could have a Mastodon account and a Friendica account, maybe linked in some ways but functionally separate.

@jamie @smallcircles @robacarp @liaizon or maybe I’m stuck in the Twitter/Facebook paradigm and I can’t imagine how things could work differently 🤷

@Brendanjones @jamie @robacarp @liaizon Well, it might be one account, many identities. Right now each instance requires its own account. When I want to post on Lemmy, I can't do it on with my Mastodon account, yet I can comment with that account. My masto and lemmy account are the same, yet split.For some people if you @-mention their handle, you get a dropdown list and the right one falls of that list.

@smallcircles @jamie @robacarp @liaizon is one account possible right now, technically speaking? Wouldn’t it require some new layer at the Activitypub level? (I don’t know, I’m not a developer) From a usability perspective it sounds great, having one common identity across the fediverse.

@Brendanjones> is one account possible right now, technically speaking?You can use one account to follow and interact with most stuff on the fediverse. But as @smallcircles says of Lemmy, you need an account on each service to post content there. The holy grail of using one account to post everywhere would require widespread use of the client-to-server part of ActivityPub. @jamie @robacarp @liaizon

@strypey @Brendanjones @jamie @robacarp @liaizon Note that #Streams uses the #Nomad protocol, which has matured over years. Though I have never tried it as yet, if offers #NomadicIdentity.> Nomadic identity describes a mechanism where the data stored by your social network can be mirrored to multiple servers in near realtime and any of these servers can be used at any time should your "primary" server be unavailablehttps://codeberg.org/streams/streams/src/branch/dev/FEDERATION.md
