Peterson is such a damn retarded academic. He’s talking about how ChatGPT is gonna put everyone out on their ass, even says - get this - he thinks that a third of colleges will be bankrupt in the next 5 years . Of course he thinks it’s revolutionary, he’s a professor. He doesn’t do anything that actually matters in the real world. To him, a machine that shits out pointless academic papers for no one to read usurps his job, it changes the world. In reality……well, as long as you aren’t in the content-mill industry, you’re fine.It has to go a long way until the liability, the database, the reliability comes to fruition. As it is it will shit out a bunch of data that looks good on the first pass, but ultimately fails the second you actually try to implement it. The idea that you can just program it to be smart is even funnier if you expect to train it with the internet. 90% of what’s out there is bunk, worthless, to the point it’s actively harmful towards finding the right answer. Sure, it will automate some things, but I don’t see it taking over things that matter for a while, it’s simply not trustworthy enough. You’re gonna have professional standards creep into it when someone’s GPT-designed house collapses because of obvious, glaring flaws that never got seen by a 55 yo boomer who’s been in construction for decades. The AI, even if it can do citations and regurgitate basic information correctly, will face a huge hurdle trying to coherently synthesize multiple sources. I am also skeptical it could analyze the 'Method' sections of anything using statistics, except for regurgitation that will be obvious zero critical thinking.Long-term, it very well could be effective, and savvy researchers may even use the AI to run statistical analyses for them (we know what will happen then), but for now, it is basically as you say: 1 million 91 IQ reddit answers, or 1 million C or D grades.

A person improves at language by learning more about the language (grammar, vocabulary, etymology, etc.) and using it to navigate the world. Programmers tried copying this back in the 60's by hardcoding syntax and grammar rules into computer language models and they sucked, but some nerds realized you could replace the language rules with statistical guesswork and get better results. Ever since all computer language work consists of removing as much "understanding" as possible from the machine and replacing it with "We don't know what it it's doing but the output looks correct"-statistics.It's hard to convey how monstrously retarded this is, nerds are creating some of the most complicated wastes of electricity imaginable in order to build a machine that understands nothing about language but can convince millions of non-technical people that it does. These machines have no comprehensible logic under the hood and will fail in the most incomprehensible ways because of it, and the problem only gets worse.
