Apparently Frendica DMs don't really work properly with Mastadon and if you use the "Direct" privacy setting in a reply it just posts it as Public. Whoops. That'll learn me for not testing things safely when unsure.

The issue of Frendica DMs not being interoperable with Mastodon is a known one. The direct reply thing was mostly me misunderstanding how Fedilab for Andriod would respond if I tried to do something that was supported on Mastodon but not on Frendica. I expected it would produce an error message if I tried doing something unsupported rather than just silently degrade privacy. That's a bad default.

@mnemonicoverload it might still be something of interest to Tom at @apps. An error/note might be an optionI mostly just use the web interface on friendica (private account) so this might have saved me from embarrassment

Yeah. This account is really only pseudo-anon as google will cough up my real identity associated with this handle if you dig enough but I still wasn't thrilled to see my firstname-lastname email address accidentally posted in the clear in a reply for however long it took for the deletion to fully propagate across the Fediverse. lol

@mnemonicoverloadWhile we deeply agree that it is an important mistake, we just discovered it. That means when posting with the privacy "direct", the Friendica api accepts it without error and it replaces it with a public visibility. We warned our Friendica users and we will disable the private visibility for Friendica. Cc @ConnyDuck @gbraad

It's in the (newish?) "Extra features" section of the Settings in Fedilab. Enable the toggle for "Extra features" and then further down the same setting page there's another toggle for "Display the Quote button" under Icons for extra features.
