Android / iOS interoperability still going great.Earlier today someone texted me a video from Android and it arrived as a 60x80 anim-GIF. If you're wondering if the message actually came from a 1997 Nokia, no, I asked. I'm used to the experience that...https://jwz.org/b/yj8s

@jwz and every entity involved will point the finger at someone else. Google will blame Apple who will blame Google in return, then they'll both blame either the sending or receiving carrier, who will in turn blame one another before also blaming the handset manufacturers. If a stakeholder group of reps from roughly a dozen entities got together for two weeks and hammered out some standards this wouldn't be a thing, or at least not the mess it is today, but sadly they won't care unless it gets too expensive not to.

@me Presumably they're just not interested in doing that. Making iMessage an open protocol (or vice versa with whatever Google's version is) would be perceived as giving up a strategic advantage in terms of customer lock-in. They can't get away with not interoperating at all, but making it just that much more annoying to talk to someone who uses the competition? Why that's plain good business!

@jwz @me Honestly I’d rather iMessage wasn’t an open protocol, because it not being means there’s essentially zero spam. RCS, which is what Android uses, is an open protocol, but because it was designed by the carriers it’s only accessible from the telephone network, not from the Internet, probably allows per-message billing (like SMS did) and likely requires hefty fees and conformance tests before you can use it.

@al45tair Closed systems with no interoperability don't get much abuse. You'll never get spam on your fax machine if you don't plug it in.

@al45tair @jwz @me This is ridiculous. No protocol, open or proprietary, that is *useful* has no spam.
