“If we all rode bikes like the Dutch, annual global emissions would drop nearly 700 million tonnes. This mammoth figure exceeds the entire carbon footprint of most countries, including the UK, Canada, Saudi Arabia & Australia.”

@BrentToderian That only works if you live close to your job in a city or you are not in a massive factory that has to be out in the boonies due to needing a large land area (so it would not work for manufacturing plants at all).

@darnell @BrentToderian These statistics are despite many people in NL having the same conditions you mention.Carless is only possible if work / living / family / school / public services are all in biking range. Something that isnt the reality in NL for most people. But nonetheless dutch people bike more on average.

@joeldebruijn @BrentToderian That would not work in America where many people drive 30 minutes to get to work. That is the same for many countries too. It's a pipe dream at best due to the distance between where people live and where people work.Airports, manufacturing plants (& other factories), large farmlands, military bases, schools, etcetera, are usually not reasonably accessible via bike due to their location from where people live.

@darnell @joeldebruijn @BrentToderian That isn't necessarily true. I worked in a warehouse that was about 45 minutes by car from where I lived, but I did it by using a folding bike at both ends of a train trip. There are places in America where it would currently be hard to do. But we could build the infrastructure to make it easy if we were willing.
