I’m worried that the last few weeks have made us think the problem is Twitter’s leadership when maybe the real problem is Twitter.

@hankgreenProprietary social networks, if you ask me. Which reminds me, any plans to mirror the SciShow on @tilvids or similar? #PeerTube

@csolisr @hankgreen has it right, the problem isn't the just leader, it's the medium. The current state of Twitter was always a possibility, and the same could be said for any of the centralized social media ecosystems. And SciShow is brilliant, I've been a fan for years. Absolutely the example of content we're striving to get to on #tilvids If you're ever interested, we'd love to give you a home on #PeerTube !

@hankgreen I think that the leadership has created a very different set of problems than Twitter previously had.I also knew a lot of people who worked at Twitter (and of course no longer do) who were amazing researchers and designers, and were working to make things better. I no longer think there is a possibility for things to get better. Also I said goodbye Twitter officially today!

@cfiesler this makes a lot of sense. I just think it’s a very very very hard thing to make better. Even if you take the profit motive out it’s hard.

@hankgreen Agreed. :( I'm hoping that between Mastodon (talking to other academics/scientists) and TikTok (talking more to the general public/science communication) I can collectively get much of what I got from Twitter, but this still makes me so much sadder than I realized it would.

@cfiesler @hankgreen If you're into the fediverse and doing content, you might want to take a look at #PeerTube if you haven't already. Most of the problems #Twitter had, YT and Tik-Tok do or will suffer from...aside from the new leadership problem that has emerged at Twitter, which is unique to that platform (for now).

@ozoned @csolisr @hankgreen Like I said elsewhere, I love the show and have for years. All Hank has to do is say the word and I'll gladly give him space on the site! I'm hearing more and more Mastodon users refuse to even go to YouTube anymore, so it's unlikely to disrupt what's happening there anyway, at least for now.

@tilvids @ozoned @9njT0dNsbv8Yr3nj7I.csolisr@social.azkware.net @hankgreen Count me in as one of those Mastodon users. Between Peertube; Odysee; Rumble; and Bitchute I have zero use for Youtube. Of course I prefer Peertube but anything othwr than Youtube is a plus for me.

@tilvids @cfiesler @hankgreen Is there anyone in the world who is a professional, paying for rent and grocery bills PeerTuber?

@mike @cfiesler @hankgreen I can't say for sure, but I doubt it, at least not yet. I would argue though that most YT'ers can't do that either, which is why you see so many of them still having jobs, using Patreon, selling merch, taking sponsorships, etc. Which means that the problem isn't that PeerTube lacks ad revenue, it's that it lacks an audience. That's where we need to continuously build a community and draw in both users AND creators. It's a marathon, not a sprint...
