Not nearly enough tech people (or researchers studying tech!) are willing to admit that the last ten years of reckless and non-consensual experimentation on people for their little gadgets have done profound harm to people and that we will look back on this period the way we now view Victorian ingestion of arsenic or health sanitoriums. The lack of care or concern is astounding, constantly.

@joshuafoust Wow I never thought about it. You're right! We should absolutely replace therapists and psychologists with AI!.First coders, then journalists, now this. Sometimes the future does seem brighter!

Who cares? We live in a society where human lives don't matter but capital.Victorians knew arsenic was poisonous. The business was going great. Century later group of car manufacturers was testing diesel fumes on humans and monkeys. In 2021, just 3 years after "public was shocked", 1,680,512 audi cars were sold. What's my point? I don't know. Exposing such information to the public is not working. Convicing the public that doing this may stop current action but won't change the game.Maybe a deeper, systemic change is needed. Maybe we should not point a finger a companies but at people. But how when it is always a company that is present at courts and who led the "research" is a confidential information?

@joshuafoust the worst part of this specific incident is that when confronted with people chastising them for running this experiment without the informed consent of the patients, he just doubles down and says that it's fine because the support staff knew what was happening. Why can't these people see the running research on mental health patients without their consent or requiring them to consent to receive treatment is unethical?

@cjshearwood@peoplemaking.games @joshuafoust@appdot.net Does informed consent meaningfully exist anymore? As far as I can tell the legal/illegal distinction has entirely broken down into who gets hurt. How much longer until employers mandate AI-driven mental health services for the "good of the workforce"?

@joshuafoust On the one hand yes, on the other hand the AI will probably offer better help than the average therapist.

@wilmhit @joshuafoust Yeah, the "It was company's fault, not mine" bullshit has to end, but it is also a seriously complicated subject that I have no idea where to begin attacking it.The only thing I know is, that:1) Law is above morality. If you act morally, but break the law, you will be punished. This is unacceptable.2) No communityIf you have no community, then you don't care what damage you do to them. It's just you, your money, and after you die, others suffering won't affect you.

@claudius @aral @joshuafoust I've read the thread and the clarification thread and to me it makes it even worse.Situation seems to be, but there's a lot of smoke, that patients used an online service to talk with human therapists, some human therapists could opt-in to feed patient messages into the chatbot and use the outcome to provide answers to the patients. It sounds to me, despite statements that everybody was aware, that the patients didn't know this was happening to their sessions.

@joshuafoust Well, he clarified it was opt-in and people knew beforehand about the machine being involved. However, this still raises so many questions about ethics. He has academic background - how it didn't occur to him that this kind of experiment has serious research ethics problems? Especially in a so tightly regulated field like medicine?!

@joshuafoust That guy and his company are literally asking to be sued into oblivion if someone gets hurt and it will get connected to the health advice dished out by the robot, regardless of the human supervision.

@joshuafoust to be honest I think non-anonymous social media will be viewed that way as well. It warps people psychologically in really bad ways

No, i don't expect individuals to take actions (although sometimes this does work). Yes, the laws should be changed.

@joshuafoust@appdot.net "We provided mental health trough an AI that can't even do math or give you proper directions, and we will make you believe whatever you want to believe just so that you invest on our company and we can make more money at expense of everyone else's health" is what I'm reading on that tweet.

We're in a really scary era where a lot of people who have never been told about medical ethics are implementing things that violate medical ethics. It lets you advance quickly technologically, no doubt, but as you've pointed out it can result in a lot of things we find out later caused catastrophic problems for people that can never be made right.
