I’m trying to figure out why almost no podcasts are interesting to me, but I can listen to the audio of a lot of YouTube and Nebula content and it’s engaging. There’s something about voice/tone that is significantly different.

@anildash Aha, so interesting!I love observations like this. And I think you’re right – there’s something about the tone of voice that comes when someone is speaking to the camera in an online video that’s qualitative more engaging than the cadences of podcastsMaybe because the way the person is speaking is more embodied? Because they’re presenting to a camera? Relatedly …

@anildash … the tone of voice in YouTube videos, or any other form online video is astonishingly better and higher and more intelligent than TV newsevery once in a while, when I’m traveling, I turn on a local TV news, cast and listen to it without looking at the screen, or even with the screen totally darkened It’s *alarming*It any normal person of your acquaintance started speaking, the way people do on TV news, you would insist they seek *immediate medical attention*

@clive @anildash There's definitely something similar to the difference in tone between most stories in an established publication vs. a blog post or newsletter. Podcasts are intimate and can be casual, but are often just too polished or formatted to feel really personal.

@clive @anildash@mastodon.cloud I remember Hugo Weaving explaining that he based the cadence of Agent Smith's dialogue in the Matrix on news readers, because it was familiar but inhuman.

@clive when we were in India the last few weeks, most public spaces had TV news on, and the format has metastasized even worse than in the U.S., so it was literally just BRIGHT RED screens with 3-8 people shouting at each other and actually false assertions being made in front of a background of CG flames, along with the requisite 3-4 scrolling lines of text. A grim vision of our future.

@clive @anildash Friend of mine does a very succesful history podcast, but I can't listen to it--I don't really do podcasts anyway, but he just sounds WRONG to me, it's not him chattering away it's him trying to enunciate every word and speak clearlyAdmittedly his natural accent is harder for USians to understand so I get it, but it's just Not HimPlus I can get him talking about any of the episode subjects by just inviting him around for a meal and that's more fun

@clive @anildash That’s interesting! I have been surprised that so many podcasts also post YouTube videos. Like, why go to that much trouble. But maybe they’re on to something.

@clive @anildash yep. The podcasting genre was originally dominated by conversations. Now it’s a lot of stuff that is produced like a scripted radio show. My rule is, if it’s obvious that the speakers are simply reading content to me, I would much rather read it myself than have someone slowly say it to me. Hence, I’ve never finished an audiobook (except for David Sedaris, the master).

@clive @anildash Given "if it bleeds, it leads" and only things that bleed make the news, then the tone of news casters logically follows. They have worked out that fear and anxiety drive viewership. This is related to why people who watch the news believe we're in a crime epidemic while statistics show the exact opposite.
