Striking that Valeri Polyakov's 14-month stint on Mir remains the longest ever in outer space, or in zero-g. It proves, as the man himself said right when he returned, "We can fly to Mars." That was 28 years ago. What have we been waiting for since?#spaceflight #history #thoughtshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valeri_Polyakov

@adamasnemesis no, we can't fly to mars and this doesn't come close to proving itbut lets say the us decided to spend an insane amount of money and did fly to marswhat on earth is the point ????

@adamasnemesis Strategic national interests and/or profit. Historically, colonies were usually only started for one or both of those reasons—and the sheer technical and financial barriers to entry for manned space flight preclude any outliers (e.g., fleeing for religious or personal reasons) from occurring.

@hughtaylorscifi Sure. The main point I'm making, though, is that with regard to a Mars mission people often talk like the effect of the spaceflight itself on a human is an unknown, when we already demonstrated the required endurance decades ago. Only real quibble is the different radiation etc. environment in deep space; testing this is one thing the Lunar Gateway might actually be useful for, but they haven't been planning on more than 3-month stays on it! Ugh.
