Get ready for the propaganda initiative in which Mastodon will be labeled a site for “groomers” and “pedophiles.” It’s the least creative messaging imaginable, but you know it’s only a matter of time before we hear it coming from Elon, Fox, Daily Wire, etc. FWIW, Human Events is a right wing rag with roots that stretch back to the Goldwater conservatism of the early 1960s. It was Reagan’s favorite source of information.

The former Infowars guy behind Macron Leaks and Pizzagate is now on the case. Given his ties with Bannon and Elon’s habit of interacting on friendly terms with him, I’d guess it’s only a matter of time before this becomes “the well known truth” in certain segments of Twitter land. And of course, real journalists will now be forced to discuss this.

It’s almost like the entire media strategy of the right is frozen in that developmental stage when you realize if you tell someone to not think of a brown bear, then they’ll think of a brown bear. That, and also the “I know you are but what am I” phase.

@sethcotlar Is there any substantial truth to it? I mean, I assume any platform will attract bad actors, but is there any reason to believe Mastodon is a "safe haven" or has a special attraction for pedophiles? Everything I've read, up until seeing this post, just talks about Mastodon as a more civil, less toxic, Elon Musk-free alternative to Twitter, and *those* qualities make it sound terrific, not problematic.

@DanielEsq @sethcotlar The SecJuice story claims the #2 and #3 instances are full of child porn. Both are Japanese, run by Mask Network/Social Coop Limited, and I think both are defederated? Powoo and Mstdn dot jp, I don't really know anything about them but the former is anime-themed and Mask also seems to be pushing Web3/cryptocurrency nonsense.

@DanielEsq Given the source, I would give the claims exactly zero credence. These are outlets that say Trump won and that vaccines don’t work, so not super big on evidence. In my time on Mastodon I have seen nothing remotely inappropriate.

@sethcotlar @DanielEsq The reason you don’t see anything inappropriate is likely due in large part to your instance admin. My admin has a long list of instances we are defederated from for Nazi/hate and/or pedo material so there certainly is bad stuff out there. The rules are entirely up to admins, so it’s important to find the instance that works for you.

@lucybeahere @sethcotlar @DanielEsq That's like saying "Windows is infested with child porn" because lots of pedos use Windows and store their files on it.If they're defederated, they may be using the Mastodon software to run their pedo instance, but they aren't part of *this* (gestures vaguely around).

@DanielEsq @sethcotlar I think its almost impossible for Mastodon to have those problems ,on servers admins would remove the account and if it was a server with a lot of issues that admins were not dealing with then the other servers would block the entire server /instance ,like they did with Trumps attempt a few years back .

@HelenGraham @sethcotlar Yeah, that's a good point. My server has protocols and content moderation policies to screen out bad content, even to they point of blocking entire servers that they said had bad content at one point or another (there's a list, somewhere in the Admin pages for my server, showing the other servers they blocked, and the reasons for it).

There are two very huge mastodon site in Japan that carry a lot of CP, they have been blocked and de-federated by every instance in fedverse. However, the internet is global and the platform open source. Anyone can set it up. Hard line nationalists have instances out there.They also use email.So, this is like saying Email is mainly use for crime.

This entire propaganda campaign is premised upon the target audience having no idea what Mastodon or the fediverse is or how any of this works. All the propagandists need them to "know" is that it's a CP site and anyone involved with it is implicated in that, and their work is done.

@sethcotlar @shatter @HelenGraham @DanielEsq i think it is essential that people stop using the term "CP" to describe this kind of content as it implies that children and pornography CAN be a thing, it cannot. this is why CSAM is a term to begin with. when people do use the term CP, they use things like lolicon to try and push to make CSAM less vile and a bit more normalized. this is not a good thing to do imo. it's a hard line that needs to stay a hard line and those terms really water down the line, it shouldnt be.
