Right now it's hard to go a week without something random going wrong, now my OBS Flatpak refuses to use the H264 encoder but I can still use it with my native package

@BrodieOnLinux But... But... We are always told that flatpaks are perfect, never have issues and are the solution to everything. 😂😂Disclaimer.I am joking. Just so people don't lose their mids.

@roo79 Looking at it more it seems like OBS was built against an old version of VAAPI and no one has updated it yet. But I'm not 100% certain if that's the cause

@BrodieOnLinux did you update at all? If yes, reverting to the old flatpak might help for now

@BrodieOnLinux wait, isn't the whole spiel about the "universal package formats" is that they contain all the dependencies, so they can run wherever, whenever?

@nicemicro Mostly, but your flatpaks will also be dependent on certain framework flatpaks so really it provides a consistent environment across every distro. AppImage is the one that bundles everything.

@nicemicro @BrodieOnLinux flatpak is just another distro

@shironeko @nicemicro I think that's best way too look at it, it's a micro distro embedded into other distros

@BrodieOnLinux @nicemicro honestly it's not that different from nix or guix, just with sandboxing. I wish the sandoxing part and the distro part are separate software tbh.

@BrodieOnLinux So, in short, if a "framework" flatpak your user facing flatpak depends on is bumped to a newer version, your flatpak will have to be rebuilt, just like how you need to rebuild the binary on Arch or anywhere, if a dependency is upgraded. It's always nice to have the same problems, but twice.

@shironeko yeah, but those things are being (or in the process of being) solved by SELinux and AppArmor I think.

@BrodieOnLinux @roo79 The runtime (21.08) that OBS 28 relies on should never do breaking changes like changes VAAPI version, so I'm lost. But https://gitlab.com/freedesktop-sdk/freedesktop-sdk/-/issues/1528 seems to show that a minor version broke things.Note that out 29 betas VAAPI are broken because Freedesktop also decided to split patented codec on 22.08 and also because KDE still didn't rebuild their 6.4 runtime.

@tytan652 @roo79 I was just spit balling ideas it could be, after reporting the issue it seems to be a duplicate of this https://github.com/obsproject/obs-studio/issues/7956, which links to that libva regression. I did try out the OBS 29 beta and uninstalled it very quickly when h264 was missing.

@tytan652 @roo79 Does there happen to be a issue for that OBS 29 problem or is it just being discussed in the forums

@BrodieOnLinux @roo79 OBS 28 and OBS 29 does not have the same issue. The OBS 29 issue was only discussed in the OBS Discord server and Flathub Matrix channel.Because of the patented codec split, OBS 29 can't enable VAAPI because the KDE Runtime still not rebuilt against the newer 22.08 runtime with the new extra feature.

@tytan652 @roo79 I got that they were seperate issues, I was just curious of there was an issue for that OBS 29 issue as well. This patent situation is a giant mess, a few years from now once AV1 adoption properly occurs will be nice.

@BrodieOnLinux @roo79 If 29 is released before KDE rebuild the runtime, I will open an issue on OBS side. For now I want to believe that they will finally rebuild it in time.I guess I will need to ping on the Matrix channel to ask for update.

@tytan652 @roo79 If they don't then the flatpak is broken, surely someone else involved in OBS will take notice

@BrodieOnLinux @roo79 The problem is that another issue prevent the rebuild to succeed. And they still didn't fixed it and with the end of year into account, I understand it takes time.

@BrodieOnLinux yeah, I noticed that as well while playing with obs, but in my case that codec gets selected automatically, plus when the initialisation fails, it blocks my screenreader and I have to restart it to regain speech.
