Well, @signalapp decided to fuck over users like me in 10 days. They're intentionally bricking the version of Signal that still supports SMS.Signal does not fight for the user.I do. I'll be compiling a version of Signal with this check commented out.If I don't get to it in the next 10 days, you can find me on Matrix, which uses Signal's double ratcheting algorithm for their end to end encryption.@matrix we love you!

@dustinfinn @signalapp @matrix There are options:1. Compile a version that doesn't have this check, possibly causing issues with Signal functionality2. Don't upgrade and see what happens in 10 days (likely lose both SMS and Signal support)3. Upgrade Signal and lose SMS support, but Signal keeps working otherwiseI will continue using another app (Matrix client) for secure comms. Sadly, the SMS/Matrix bridge doesn't support MMS.

@andreasio @signalapp @matrixHmm, interesting. I know for sure it was disabled in 5.53.8, because that is what caused me to roll back to 5.52.5. Maybe they re-enabled it after that? I'll grab a test phone and see if I can reproduce your results.

@adam @signalapp @matrix Yes, thats where I was going with this. Either way you lose SMS, not happy about it either, but, this is more of a stance that theyre taking it away/not supporting it so youre leaving vs there being another type of issue with Signal. understood now - thanks

@andreasio @signalapp @matrix I have it sufficiently figured out- v5.52.5 Signal fully supports SMS on Android- v5.53.8 Signal removed ability to send SMS less than a week after their blog post saying there's plenty of time, receiving still worked-v? Signal re-enabled SMS sending-v6.5.6 I find out Signal has re-enabled SMS sending6.5.6 is the latest outside of the Play Store, even signal.org doesn't have 6.3.6!https://signal.org/android/apk/

@andreasioI just upgraded to the latest version, can send SMSes just fine (just as you said). ❤️I still know the Signal devs are going to do a rug pull at some point, but at least I'm good for now.F-droid lets me roll back a version or two, so hopefully I'll notice shortly after the update that drops that drops SMS support. I don't send many SMSes, so it might be a while before I notice if I don't manually test for it after each update.

@adam in Denmark few of my contacts use signal... So still a lot of sms.
