How resistant is the fedi to EEE tactics? Let's say that Google launches an instance, let's call it Google++, today. They manage to garner a significant userbase because it's marketed heavily and most people already have an account. Maybe they add some proprietary "features" that only work with other G++ users. I predict the following: Mass defederation with G++, followed by people wanting to be able to talk to their friends on G++, followed by instances relaxing their policies or new G++ friendly instances popping up. As things progress, G++ gains more control of the network until every instance admin is forced to abide by Google's rules or be unable to communicate with most of the fediverse.Something similar has happened with email. How can we prevent it from happening here?#askfedi #askfediverse #askmastodon #bigtech

@jforseth210 thats a good question........human nature is very monkey see monkey do.an interesting counter argument:irc vs rocketchat/discord/slackall have lots of users, but none get along, but all are essentially irc, each with its own distinct userbase.it sounds to me like at some point , there will be some manner of fork, but the thing therein is ,eventually it'll just split things in weird ways.the idea of social collectivism is nice in theory, but ultimately its marxist.

@ringo@jforseth210The IRC reference is a good one. I see the problem that started with IRC and email is that there is a barrier to entry for hosting. Most people don't have the ability to setup even the easiest server for those services.RocketChat can be setup and working rather easily. Discord and slack, even more so. I think that we fracture because a lot of people want things that they can't grasp. Corporations step in & lower the barrier for a fee. Then they try to lock out alternatives.
