Before I started on Mastodon, I thought this would be too complicated. Weeks later, I’m not sure what I thought would be so difficult. Why is this the reputation? What are people finding so challenging?#mastodon #twitter #twittermigration

@therobburgessshow I think having to choose a server is intimidating when you know nothing about the platform. What if you (gasp) choose wrong? And to be fair, I'm on my third instance since November. I think a lot of people would have given up after the 2nd, let alone the 1st.

@pyutaros @therobburgessshow Would it be easier to invite people to the instance you are using , that way they can at least be onboard and we can help further from there.

@zleap @therobburgessshow maybe? That's good for people you know. But even then, I joined Zirk.us because of its focus on music and art. Many of my firends might prefer sdf.org for techie things, or some other instance for video games. But for the general public? I'm not sure. The servers listed at joinmastodon.org/servers are good but not exhaustive. I inevitably used instances.social to find my current home. Maybe a site that examines servers with the least load and directs people there.

@therobburgessshow Lack of user-friendly documentation at the easy end of a google query, mostly. The initial UX is awful and unwelcoming.Edit: My sign-up was several waves ago. Things may have improved since then. Though from what I'm seeing, journalists are still presenting it as a mysterious place where there be dragons and other strange beasts.

@faduda @therobburgessshow I do not get the journalists. With a few exceptions, they come here, post infrequently, and then disappear after a few days. There are a lot of us here who aren't on Twitter. Unless they are here, we don't see them.

@Beth @faduda @therobburgessshow Journalism is a little like mansplaining. It gets discouraged if it’s not met with sufficient awe and wonder.

@khoji @Beth @faduda @therobburgessshow I think there is quite a simple explanation that is related to that: journalists talk ideals but their business is actually to get clicks. So they go where they think they'll get clicks. And their employers advertise on Twitter, as well. And the major media exists PRIMARILY to fill the space between advertisements.

@chemoelectric @khoji @Beth @faduda @therobburgessshow It used to be that the advertising was just a vehicle to drive the news.

@kinyutaka @chemoelectric @Beth @faduda @therobburgessshow When your economic survival depends on clicks and likes, that poisons your work and your life. I find putting my photography out on Mastodon so refreshing: Here I can be just as happy about an image that just reached 3 people, because I know I reached the people who saw something the way I saw it.

@khoji @chemoelectric @Beth @faduda @therobburgessshow If only that would put food on the plate, right?Ironically, the Google method of ads, while terrible, is probably the best option, since there is no direct agreement from the advertisers to the publication. It can lead to hilarity when you blast Peleton right next to a Peleton ad, though.

@khoji @kinyutaka @Beth @faduda @therobburgessshow If I wanted more attention than I get, I would use hashtags more!(That's one of the advices I consider garbagy: an UNQUALIFIED "Use hashtags a lot." Sure, if you like getting trolled! Of course for photos it often makes great sense.)
