So I made a "pending review" decision on the fediverse full-text search engine we wrote - uses the public API, which means it can't be defederated, and it fetches from a range of dynamic IPs, so please don't try relying on IP blocks, filling out robots.txt is the solution for hosts, or as a user set your profile to do-not-index on mastodon and/or add #noindex to your bio). Available under login ONLY to *verified* instance moderators (and only searching federated instances of that mod). I.E. if the server is defederated from your instance, their mods can't search the commons for anything. *Constructive* feedback on this welcome (including thoughts on adding watch-phrases for flagging abuse patterns for review, making robots.txt-banned instances public, or anything else that improves moderation), please let me know NOW not later. Would rather a discussion before the cat is out of the bag than afterwards. #fediblock (because I know that hashtag will get me feedback) #flameproofpantstime

@cloy i get youre trying to reduce damage but the reality is that everyone will be using the open-source thing with no restrictions placed on it

@opal which OS thing? this is a tool I would give to server admins that can only search their federation... I am confuse about the controversy here :)

@cloy it isnt controversial but probably not gonna be as useful as you anticipate compared to what others might work on

@opal - you mean the FOSS scraper? This is one of the reasons I want us as a community get control of this before bad things happen.... so far am just getting a lot of abuse, can cope with that but isn't very constructive

@cloy authenticated fetch and whitelisting is the only surefire way to mitigate against scrapers so idk how your efforts compete against that

@cloy@techhub.social hi there matt, I notice in the replies down-thread that this is intended to be a commecial offering, something which obviously creates perverse incentives for you to allow abuse, not to say that this isn't abusive in its own right.the fact you wrote this post is a tacit acknowledgement that you are aware this is something which violates boundaries, which also calls into question whether this proposal is even legal insofar as data protection law legitimacy.i also note that you should delete your account. hope this constructive feedback is helpful, scum like you don't belong on the fediverse and we'll be better without you, as will your instance.

@opal we only use the public API to grab what is marked as "public" - we index words to posts, thats it. No user identifiable data, browser grabs the posts. The "mods only" thing was trying to ensure it's not used for abuse, but given the hate I'm now getting - possibly re-considering that stance (not reality: will wake up tommorow with same morals I have today) - so as long as SOME useful feedback comes on how to prevent harm with the tool, am happy.

@cloy yeah i get all that, but, the existence of your tool (the one that uses the indexes in a "friendly" way) does not negate the existence of other tools that use the same APIs for perhaps a malicious intent, thats the point i was trying to drive home

@cloy What do you mean by "verified instance moderators"? Who is verifying that? How? And for that matter, how could you possibly verify whether one instance is federated with another?

@hazel - finding who is federated with who technically is an interesting question - but the initial implementation would just allow mods to search posts on their server and anyone interacting with anyone on their server - in terms of verified mods I'd start by contacting the server admins and asking. Thats it.

@opal but my empirical evidence already tells me there are those, so unless I FOSS our solution - how would we be contributing there?

@cloy you realise there are also abusive and shitty instance admins, right? are you going to give this tool to poast and truth social and all of the loli servers admins too? where are you going to draw the line?

@kabrams nope (or yep, depending on which sentence :)), because I would hope servers defederate them, and that's literally part of the plan, not allowing admins to search servers outside their federation.

@cloy doesn't protect smaller instances who might not have as robust of a block list, and weren't aware their server was being federated to a known bad actor.

@t54r4n1 - that's an open question - beyond taking back control from law enforcement that already have these tools, and doing so ethically in a way that helps people identify and mitigate abuse against minorities.

@cloy @t54r4n1 so you're building this commercially, as you said in another thread, what if some coppers want to buy it, will you sell to them ?

@cloy you... you want to build this tool because "the cops probably have it so i want it"? that's a terrible reason to do anything. let me ask a clarifying question for you then, since you're spending time and effort on it:how does opt-out full text search (your tool) 'help people identify and mitigate abuse against minorities'?
