@coldacid - should have tagged this #throwbackthursday :) - coming as an ex-demo coder from the 90s, why do you think this important though? - these days even javascript runs at 90% the speed of C.

@coldacid @Klaatu even embedded systems and microcontrollers these days are powerful enough to support some level of abstraction - I wonder what will happen when that knowledge actually dies out!?

@coldacid @Klaatu - reminds me, I had these for my BBC micro :D - was my first contact with C

@kallisti @Klaatu @coldacid - true, but when I was 8 I didn't really care about that, the BBC micro was primarily a learning machine, and I got to learn C on it :) - wouldn't consider implementing anything serious.

@coldacid @kallisti @Klaatu - still an active demoscene on C64, is amazing what people can pull off nowadays: e.g.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DUilAJv0dQ

@aral @boyter Isn't there already a profile flag in mastodon for this - "do not index"? Its what we use to only index the posts from people that want to appear in a search engine. (Also I can guarantee you there are many 3 letter agencies that already grab and index all the open content regardless of settings unless private) - opt-in / opt-out by default is up to the instances.

@boyter - well of course there *is* indexing going on, just perhaps not by this particular app :) - anyone who thinks otherwise is super naive. I know of at least three groups scraping mastodon content. For me the question is do we want it publicly known that content is being pulled (and educate peoples behavior to that effect) or just to cause enough fuss to brush it under the rug so that the only people to do it are in secret / moral free / bad actors / governments?

@boyter there's even a flag in the public API to indicate you don't want your content indexed (my point being the devs knew this would be an issue) - not that I would trust a bad actor to respect that.

@boyter security through obscurity went out the window the moment elon took over birdsite and there was a mass exodus here is my main point. Think the app is fine. People are just expecting a level of privacy that just doesn't exist on the internet. Putting your head in the sand and ignoring that fact is totally counterproductive - you can shout at the tide as much as you like.

So I made a "pending review" decision on the fediverse full-text search engine we wrote - uses the public API, which means it can't be defederated, and it fetches from a range of dynamic IPs, so please don't try relying on IP blocks, filling out robots.txt is the solution for hosts, or as a user set your profile to do-not-index on mastodon and/or add #noindex to your bio). Available under login ONLY to *verified* instance moderators (and only searching federated instances of that mod). I.E. if the server is defederated from your instance, their mods can't search the commons for anything. *Constructive* feedback on this welcome (including thoughts on adding watch-phrases for flagging abuse patterns for review, making robots.txt-banned instances public, or anything else that improves moderation), please let me know NOW not later. Would rather a discussion before the cat is out of the bag than afterwards. #fediblock (because I know that hashtag will get me feedback) #flameproofpantstime

@hazel - finding who is federated with who technically is an interesting question - but the initial implementation would just allow mods to search posts on their server and anyone interacting with anyone on their server - in terms of verified mods I'd start by contacting the server admins and asking. Thats it.

       - I let my server admin know, and aware that certain admins will block me just for mentioning this, but that's the proce I pay for bring attention to a glaring and dumb security hole in our ecosystem that means people put heads in sand

@kabrams nope (or yep, depending on which sentence :)), because I would hope servers defederate them, and that's literally part of the plan, not allowing admins to search servers outside their federation.

@t54r4n1 - that's an open question - beyond taking back control from law enforcement that already have these tools, and doing so ethically in a way that helps people identify and mitigate abuse against minorities.

Wow, literally asking for feedback on an idea that isn't live can get one booted from a fediverse server - who knew :/
