I tried the "Full Self-Driving (Beta)" on a Model Y in Toronto. It was terrifying.I turned off "aggressive" and "assertive" modes and "drive 20% higher than speed limit" (why are these even options?)It tried to drive in the bike lane to avoid traffic multiple times, it got totally confused by angled parking, it had to do an emergency stop to avoid hitting a pedestrian when turning right, plus dozens of other issues. At my destination it rammed right into a snowbank. Why is this legal?!

@notjustbikes It is not in California. They told Tesla to stop publishing autopilot as self autonomous driving system.Don't use it. It could kill you.

@notjustbikes And it only costs $12,000. How easily everyone was fooled by this technology is a bit scary. Especially our lawmakers who in their infinite wisdom give massive subsidies to this garbage.

@notjustbikesThe lengths that people will go to in order to avoid public transport.I'll take well designed and funded public transport over self-driving any day. Way more energy efficient, results in less traffic, and you don't have to be paying attention in case you need to take over.

@jeffalyanak @notjustbikes this requires being around extremely poor people, something i and many others simply do not ever want to tolerate

@sneak @notjustbikesThere's nothing wrong with poor people, but also in many places in the world public transport is for _everyone_, poor or wealthy.

@pthenq1 @notjustbikes I think NHTSA is also looking at Teslas for various safety problems. Like too many accidents that shouldn't have happened.

@PJ_Evans @notjustbikes Yes, indeed! It is not only Bad Elon Musk as Twit CEO. It is that Tesla did not delivery and it is time out. There is not reason to get a Tesla compared with a car from a similar car of the competence. The autopilot does not work. So... it is the same than other electric vehicle, but more expensive!

@pthenq1 @notjustbikes I drive a hybrid, because at the time I bought it electric wasn't an option. And I don't live anyplace with convenient charging.

@jeffalyanak @notjustbikes a lot of them smell badly and have untreated mental health problems; these are the main reasons i don't use public transit (almost anywhere, even where it's good/ubiquituous).

@notjustbikes Are those options taken verbatim from the user interface? Do you have a photo of that?

@newbyte that is literally what these options are called in the UI, yes. "Aggressive" and "Chill" are the acceleration options. You can easily find screenshots of this UI online, but these are the two pics that I took.

@tlalexander @notjustbikes Yeah regulatory capture but just seems absurd that a user configurable option to break the law would be in there! That’s not even pretending to regulate if that’s allowed.

@rachael @notjustbikes I can understand going above the speed limit somewhat. It would actually be dangerous here to only ever go the speed limit. Our laws were meant to be a gray area, I guess, because everyone in California goes 5-10mph over and they don’t usually ticket you unless you’re going 10+ over. Though 20% is in that range. But yeah overall it’s an immature and dangerous system.

@tlalexander @rachael @notjustbikes tickets should be issued by cameras starting at 0.1mph over the limit.

@wooliex @rachael @notjustbikes that’s just not how our speed limits were intended to be used. You have to realize we never had computers running the cars when the speed limit system was created. The point was to give police officers some personal judgment on when to ticket based on unsafe driving. In fact when you get a ticket in California they usually cite you for “speed unsafe for conditions” not “speed exceeds posted limit”.

Some people are confused about the terminology, so let me clarify:There is a Full Self-Drive (FSD) mode called "assertive" that I disabled. There is also an acceleration mode called "aggressive" that I also disabled (I set it to "chill").You can set the car to a fixed amount or % above the speed limit. At 20%, it will always drive 20% over the limit. Which is insane, but it's also what literally every Toronto driver does because the police don't enforce speed limits.
