@Jessica @TechConnectify @anathema_device why do they suck? Genuine question from somebody who has rarely used ceramic/induction. IMO nothing comes close to gas from a UX perspective! But that might be me just using them wrong 😅

@al @TechConnectify @anathema_device they're a pain to get started, a pain to clean, set off the fire alarm constantly, and extremely easy to get carbon monoxide poisoning unless you open a window or turn on an extraction fanmost electric stoves just have a sheet of glass you wipe off so they double as a table surface when they're turned off too.

@Jessica @TechConnectify @anathema_device I get the carbon monoxide concerns but the risks are low compared to a gas fire which is typically running all evening. They have a carbon filter in the flue to reduce further. I actually find my ceramic hob infinitely harder to clean than my gas stove (especially if something spilled - nothing burns onto the gas hob, but that might also be the same with induction given that it's not the hob getting hot??) and have never had a problem turning it on. I might have a check out more modern induction hobs though. My experience with them was pretty dire years ago and the heat control was a binary timed on-off thing.Looking to the future I want to go more electric, but given gas is historically much cheaper than electric it's a big decision, especially now in the UK where fuel prices are ridiculous at the moment! Maybe when we've solar/battery'd up!

@al @TechConnectify @anathema_device if you don't use a gas stove often it'll take longer to start up because of the sparks, which is pretty bad as you're just releasing straight gas into the airyou can also scrape your induction cooktop with a razor blade which costs nothing. I like gas as I use it for heating my house, but I just don't think it's good for cooking unless you're grilling and as for "binary on off" that's how most electric heaters work, you connect the stove directly to the mains and then disconnect it when it's to temperature. you could get proper temp controlled PWM I would recon but it's not really worth it

@al @Jessica @TechConnectify Induction is incredibly efficient, so if your fuel prices are high, it's really a no brainer. Merry Xmas Eve :)

@anathema_device @al @TechConnectify yea since your pot is the heating element there's less transfer loss.

@Jessica @al @TechConnectify "you can also scrape your induction cooktop with a razor blade"holy fuck, don't do this. If you scratch the tempered glass, you have to replace the whole thing! Just wipe with a soft damn cloth. Never needed anything harsher :)

@anathema_device @al @TechConnectify you're right, you should probably use plastic ones instead

@anathema_device @TechConnectify @al I should've clarified. I use plastic blades on my countertops and it works well

@anathema_device @al @TechConnectify a soft cloth isn't going to get off burned gunk or other stuff as well as a blade will

@Jessica @al @TechConnectify You shouldn't get burned on gunk with induction? I mean, I've never had anything other than dried up spills. Maybe you cook differently from me :)

@anathema_device @al @TechConnectify it can happen but it's probably rarer since most induction cooktops are portable I have a gas cooktop but I rarely use it because it's a pain in the butt to use for my gas I use a combination of mrs meyers, plastic blades, and a scrub daddy

@anathema_device @TechConnectify @al but for my kitchen table I use the plastic blade to quickly get dried up crap, and then clean with a scrub daddy afterwards

@Jessica @al @TechConnectify "most induction cooktops are portable"Not here, they're not. You *can* buy them, but mostly people have them built into their kitchen countertops. The portable ones available are okay, but only single burners, so not suitable for home cooking.

@anathema_device @al @TechConnectify I didn't really see any pro indcution cooktops until the last few years or so, I've seen way more of the portable ones
