       Here's a saying (truism?) I'm often reminded of: "We judge others by their actions but ourselves by intent."The point being, when we see an action that we dislike, we infer an intention by that person (since we can't see inside their head). And if we disliked the action, we infer an evil or malign intent. Conversely, when we are judged this way, it is sometimes very hurtful. Someone has made a judgment on our moral character, due to an action which was intended completely differently.1/

       This is all the more acute when the action was actually very painfully and laboriously turned over and considered.And when the other person doesn't have all the facts (or doesn't care to hear them) this is immensely frustrating.All of this has a point. Just over 5 weeks ago, I put up my (metaphorical) hand to be a moderator on mastodon.world - which at that time had just topped 10k users.Another moderator, @stevo, built on @ruud's work on the instance rules and we built out the CoC.2/

       We don't need every instance in this fediverse to remain federated for the concept to succeed. Someone could host their own server and invite only their friends, and that would be fine.I understand many, many people have been badly burned by the callousness and thoughtlessness of others on the internet. Such behaviour is personally against everything I stand for. Often one characteristic is picked out, misunderstood and exploited.We stand for something different here.6/

       I have absolutely set out to apply them fairly, boldly, and with the aim of standing up for the person being bullied, harassed or maligned.Inevitably there have been mistakes - these are mostly picked up when the user appeals a decision.But other times there have been difficult decisions made with the intention of protecting the overall mastodon.world community.One such decision is now being picked over and judged by several other instance admins.4/

       I must thank @wild1145 as the admin of https://mastodonapp.uk for being willing to engage with us and ask for the truth behind the rumours and hearsay making the rounds on the "fediblock" tag. Which is really my final point. In their write-up, admin@rage.love said they "don't care about" our intentions. That is of course within their gift to do. I would only ask they refrain therefore from making inferences about those intentions. I promise that they are not as they have been made out.5/
