A few reports have reached the mods about accounts impersonating well-known brands such as Microsoft (from another server). Each of these accounts were using a Twitter-style blue checkmark badge to assert legitimacy. On Mastodon this is no more than an emoji and does not convey any kind of verification. To limit any confusion, all such emojis have been disabled on mastodon.world - instead you'll just see the literal text :verified:Please report any impersonating accounts to the mods ✅🐘

Here's a saying (truism?) I'm often reminded of: "We judge others by their actions but ourselves by intent."The point being, when we see an action that we dislike, we infer an intention by that person (since we can't see inside their head). And if we disliked the action, we infer an evil or malign intent. Conversely, when we are judged this way, it is sometimes very hurtful. Someone has made a judgment on our moral character, due to an action which was intended completely differently.1/
